Surgeon General Jerome Adams said Sunday the U.S. can reverse course and control the latest outbreaks of the coronavirus in just a few weeks if people follow social distancing and hygiene guidelines to prevent the spread of the potentially fatal virus.
"Together we can turn this thing around in just two to three weeks if everyone does their part, more studies coming out showing the effectiveness of face coverings," Adams said on CBS's "Face the Nation," adding that the disease course is about two to three weeks.
"Just as we've seen cases skyrocket, we can turn this thing around in two to three weeks if we can get a critical mass of people wearing face coverings, practicing at least 6 feet of social distance, doing the things we know are effective," he said. "And it's important for the American people to understand when we're talking about the fall, we have the ability to turn this around very quickly if people will do the right thing."

CBS's Margaret Brennan asked Adams if he regrets comments he made in March urging Americans to stop buying masks, claiming then that they were not effective.
"I was saying that then because everything we knew about coronaviruses before that point told us that people were not likely to spread when asymptomatic," he said.

Problem is everyone has to participate. There are always a few selfish assholes who'll fuck it up for everyone else.

(18,634 posts)And Trump can't order it because it would make him look weak to order it so late.
We will have to wait for the next administration before we get it under control.

(16,881 posts)A simple cloth mask, black or not, is potentially worse than useless.
A simple but proper surgical mask will help prevent you from spreading the virus to others if you have it. This is the best option
N95/N98 masks will not prevent you from spreading the virus but will help you not to receive the virus from others.
Only full hospital quarantine-type medical face - coverings provide anything close to full protection.
Physical distancing is the most important measure, but be aware that the virus can travel more than six feet in droplets /aerosols outside in a breeze or indoors through aircon, and especially if projected by a sneezer/cougher/shouter/singer/trumpet-player...

If you look at who is getting the disease and dying from it, it heavily skews latinx, blacks, and Native American.

(65,076 posts)...why would you have EVER told people to stop buying masks?
Even if the "data" didn't confirm asymptomatic transmission, it didn't have the power to refute it, either.
And, many viral diseases ARE known to be transmitted in the presymptomatic period. You know, Jerome, there's DATA THAT SHOWS THAT!
Why anybody in his position would ever discourage preventative measures is distressing.
His judgment and competence are both called into question.
So,
