Question for people of puerto rican heritage....

Ok, so I was reading this story about a man who was vacationing in PR, and spit on a grocery worker who asked him to mask up. He got punched out and arrested, but that isn't what the question is about. (It was a good ending though).

The article starts out with the following phrase: "An American tourist staying in Puerto Rico"...

Now, given that all Puerto Rican's are Americans, does that strike you as offensive? To me its like saying an american tourist staying in maine....

I'm not hispanic or puerto rican, so what do I know.

Is it offensive? Just curious so I know better.....

fwiw, this is the article.. https://www.rawstory.com/2020/07/man-spits-on-grocery-store-worker-who-asked-him-to-wear-a-mask-and-immediately-gets-hit-in-the-face-police/

Diversity, dontcha know.

Or none.

I don't ever recall hearing an outcry over https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/America_(West_Side_Story_song) .

Any territory is by definition not the same as a State. Would “French tourists in St. Martin” offend you or them?

where the tourist is from (or not from). More specifically that they aren't a foreigner.

Maybe Im just sensitive because of all the admin language which treats PR as a third world non-american country. I don't think they have ever acknowledged that PR residents are US citizens.....

know PRns are citizens, and a shabby percentage reject them out of bigotry. They don't know 3/4 are white either, which shouldn't matter but it does, all contributing to the egregious injustice and neglect of...ourselves. What can be done to them can be done to any of us.

Of course most don't speak English enough to converse, and many prefer not to regard themselves as Americans, but that shouldn't affect attitudes here. Because they all are.

Our Danish-American DIL lived there for years and wishes she still did. I can see why (she'd live in San Juan, us up in the lush, green mountains with a view to forever ). But spending our golden years on an unselfsustainable island 1000 miles from the mainland struck me as risky in case anything seriously big and bad happened -- long before trumpism got power.

You see the same kind of usage, I'm pretty sure, with Hawaii which is an actual state.
