6-year-old boy praised for saving sister from dog attack

Bridger Walker, a 6-year-old boy from Wyoming, has gained social media notoriety after being praised by Anne Hathaway for rescuing his sister from a dog attack. On July 9, Bridger jumped into action when a 1-year-old old German shepherd mix charged toward his 4-year-old sister, a statement from the family obtained by CNN states. While shielding his sister he was brutally attacked by the dog.

"Tragically, instead of running off, the dog leaped and latched onto Bridger's cheek," the statement reads in part. Bridger subsequently underwent a two-hour surgery that required more than 90 stitches, according to his family.

And when his father asked him why he jumped in between his sister and the dog, he is said to have told them,
"if someone had to die, I thought it should be me," according to the statement.

The young boy's aunt started an Instagram page and shared that Bridger is an Avengers fan, which caught Hathaway's attention. "I'm not an Avenger, but I know a superhero when I see one," Hathaway wrote on Instagram alongside photos of Bridger and his sister. "I can only hope I'm half as brave in my life as you are in yours, Bridger. Wishing you an easeful recovery, and many cool looking rocks. Hey @markruffalo, do you need a teammate??"

I'm wondering what was up with the dog?

"if someone had to die, I thought it should be me," is quite a statement from a 6 yr old.

“Real courage isn’t dominating people or fighting against people or walking around like a tough guy. Real courage is knowing what is right to do and doing it even when it might end up hurting you somehow,” the actor posted.

CNN)Chris Evans is giving a special gift to one very brave little boy.

The Captain America star sent a video message to Bridger Walker, 6, who saved his four-year-old sister from a dog attack. Walker was badly injured requiring a two-hour surgery and 90 stitches to his face.

"Captain America here, so I read your story, I saw what you did and I'm sure you heard a lot of this over the last couple days, but let me be the next one to tell you, pal, you're a hero, what you did was so brave, so selfless, your sister is so lucky to have you as a big brother. Your parents must be so proud of you," Evans said in a video message posted to an Instagram page started by Walker's aunt. "I'm going to track down your address and I'm going to send you an authentic Captain America shield because pal, you deserve it."

However, there is a point at which, sometimes, deeply seated instincts override training, love, or anything else.

I have a horse that is "head shy." Someone always thinks that at some point he was abused and hit in the head. I bred the horse, he was born on our property and has never been anywhere else. No one has taken care of him except my husband, the vet, or myself. I even supervise every minute that a vet or farrier is with him. No one has EVER hit him, especially "in the head!" It is just an overly reactive sense of self protection of an area that is very vulnerable on every horse.

While I believe the rule that every dog gets one bite, this is a degree of viciousness that can never be trusted. And, having crossed the line, it is easier for that dog to do it again. There are thousands of wonderful, kind, sweet, gentle loving family dogs that get euthanized each year because shelters cannot keep them all. One of them should be saved instead and this unfortunate animal gently sent to St. Francis.

Isn't it more likely the fault lies with an irresponsible dog owner that allowed a large, apparently unsocialized dog to wander loose?

I hope the dog owner has good personal liability insurance.

If the dog was "mean" it was really stupid to allow children to play in the backyard, where the dog was.
