From a friend's FB post

She had a run in with pair of nomaskers. Never known to back down from anything, she didn’t this time either.

I have now experienced the new world we live in. Johnson County has a mask mandate in place for all businesses. I have been purchasing boxes/tape/moving supplies from the U-Haul in Olathe for months as we prepare to move. I have been uncomfortable with the fact that their employees and customers were not wearing masks prior to the mandate so I had stopped shopping there. But....I like the boxes so I went there tonight thinking - okay! They will be wearing masks...so off I went.

I arrive at the store- notice that not all of the employees are wearing masks but they were outside or behind glass so I shop around for what I need. I noticed that there was a couple in the store- not wearing masks but every other customer was wearing a mask. I wasn't comfortable but I kept my distance.

The couple proceeded to sit down on top of the boxes and have a loud conversation with someone on their phone while waiting their turn to check out...they were fighting with their son on the other end of the phone...and then began yelling at him about some family member that was "under quarantine" and how they needed their help!. Great I am thinking...then the man starts coughing and walking around the store- not even bothering to cover his mouth. She starts coughing. Ugh I am thinking. Still waiting in line for my turn- socially distancing.

I get up to check out- and now I am standing right next to them with just a rack between us. So I am trying to get the young man checking me out to - check me out quickly. But he is slow and not wearing a mask...so I ask him to please put on a mask....and ALL HELL broke out!

The man starts yelling-" she really means US! But no one is going to tell me to wear a mask...I have a Constitutional RIGHT not to wear a mask - you can't tell me what to do! My wife here is a nurse practitioner and she will tell you that there is no GOOD in wearing a mask- you probably don't even HAVE a college education! And if your afraid just stay home! No governor can tell me what to do!" ....So NOW, I am pissed off...and you know me a force to be reckoned with!

So I said to the man- "Sir, you should be wearing a mask in JoCo - there is a ordinance." He proceeded to tell me that NO ONE was going to tell him what to do.. I then stated that if his wife was a NP and not wearing a mask...well, shame on her. I, too, am a mastered prepared nurse...he then said you must be an LPN? The wife then chimed in with only N95 masks worked and wearing a regular mask would not help . I just said- "you know you are wrong.".

He yelled at me- "what about the protesters? Me- Sir,-I am not sure why that is relevant to you wearing a mask in this store/or me wearing a mask. He continues to heckle me with - "go home if you are scared. Vote for Biden is you want. No one will tell me what to do!!! Trump 2020...stay in your house if you are afraid -you sheep."

The whole time this is going on I am trying to get the kid to check me out! I plead with him...can you just check me out?

I can't see her but she starts chanting "Trump 2020-Trump 2020. " She then peeks around the counter and shows me that she is now wearing a Trump 2020 mask. I looked at her and said- "nice mask- too bad you didn't see fit to put it on when you entered this store".
She just laughs and says go home if you are so afraid!"

They left without renting the truck..but with their $20 purchase. He is still yelling at me as they exit the store. By then, I am fuming. I again asked the guy checking me out - to check me out! And can I speak to the manager. The manager was checking them out with her mask on...she comes over to check me out, and I ask her - why she didn't ask them to wear a mask when they entered her store. And why her staff were not wearing masks. She said "I didn't want to make him feel uncomfortable...if they didn't want to wear a mask! " So I looked her in the eye- so mad now. "I have spent over $300 in the past few months in your store. And you could care less how I felt this evening so you can keep your damn boxes! I will buy elsewhere! Shoved the cart out of my way...and left.

So this is what we have come to...these people clearly defying the request to wear masks and attacking me because they knew they were wrong. He was just fixin' for a fight...daring someone to question him. God help us all- and I get exposed to these bozos....and don't have my boxes.

Wear a mask people! It is not a political issue it is a public health issue!

We were in Johnson County yesterday for an outdoor memorial for a relative. All wore masks and almost everyone in the park either had one on or had one off their face as they were walking alone.

Kansas has always been hard with these issues but the one thing it always was, at least where I live, not terribly confrontational. There are always a few. It is really ramped up now. I do my best to just stay away. After the governors last order I have seen many more masks but am hearing that there will be trouble.

Sorry about your problems, I do not see this going away soon.

BTW, did you see the result of the big mask protest at the state house? I believe it was organized in JoCo. It was certainly publicized well but the front paper page showed that only 3 people showed up. I thought that was encouraging but after reading your story I don't know.

we as a nation are never getting over this virus.

We could, but with the daily tantrums buy the self entitled, self righteous right, we never will.

Refusing to wear a mask and being triggered by those who do is an EGO issue.

Ego ergo, "I" can't be wrong!" Absolute certainty and concomitant defensiveness arises from inner child tantrums and fear.
The more 'certain' anyone is, as I see them, the more certain I am that they are deeply fearful.

Saw a meme that said: "Wearing a mask isn't a political issue, it's an IQ test".

Sadly, there's a lot of truth in that.

The moment the couple started coughing I would have abandoned ship and got the phuq up out of there, and there is no way in hell I would have entertained any discussion, let alone a debate or argument with such MAGA idiots.

Winning an argument with people who won’t learn, can’t be done. And your health is so much more important than that.

Please leave if you end up in one of these situations. Immediately!

...faster than we do.

There is increasing evidence that wearing a mask offers significant benefits to the wearer as well as to someone the wearer might infect.

The strongest demographic of Trump supporters are white baby boomers, a demograpbic to which I belong, although I hold my generation's legacy in contempt.

In this demographic the fatality rate is significantly higher than in the general population. How many of us have to die off in order to improve the prospects of future generations?

Since I don't hate science as much as Trumpers do, I work to be as safe as I can. For those situations where people are clearly behaving unsafe, I get away as quickly as is possible.

In the case you describe, my personal approach would have been to consider if a nice box is really worth my life.

They're afraid of imagined government takeover (when a real one is occurring now). They are afraid of looking silly. They are afraid of their friends laughing at them. They are afraid of anyone not white. They are afraid of women (including the women, who are afraid of strong women). They are afraid of schools. They are afraid of facts. Fear drives their every panic attack.

And now that they are acting like children, they are afraid of being proven wrong. Doubling down on their Dunning Kruger

I can imagine doing a change of approach - with a nice big smile and a nice sweet voice:

"Oh, gosh, you're right! I'm SO sorry! I didn't see, at first, that you actually ARE wearing a mask! Gosh, you'll have to excuse me because I've never seen a SELFISHNESS mask before! (or a THOUGHTLESSNESS mask.) Yes, of course! I can see it now! Looks good on you!"

And I'd wink at 'em, smile again, oh-so-sweetly, and leave, with a lilting "have a nice day!"

You do understand - they ARE wearing "masks." They're wearing their SELFISHNESS masks - for all to see! And the ones who didn't get a SELFISHNESS mask before the supply ran out are wearing THOUGHTLESSNESS masks instead. See? Easy! You can tell just by looking.

(If you can't beat 'em, then FUCK with 'em.)

I have already seen several "mask" confrontations.

If I am seeing this in my short times out and about, I can only imagine that it is going on around here constantly.
