Why more young people are getting sick in the latest Covid-19 outbreaks

At the beginning of the coronavirus outbreak in the US, most Covid-19 cases seemed to be in older folks, who were getting very sick — an artifact of who was getting tested at the time.

But now, especially in states where Covid-19 cases have been rising in June and July, the median age has been dropping.

“We are seeing it in a much younger group, of 20- to 40-year-olds,” compared to the earlier stage of the pandemic, says Thomas Tsai, a health policy expert and surgeon at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

In Florida, where the coronavirus has infected more than 311,000 residents, the median age of positive cases in March was 65. As of July 17, the median age of new cases from the previous 14 days was 39.5.

So how did the coronavirus suddenly start spreading to so many young people?

We’ve known that bars and other crowded indoor spaces are hubs of spread in the new hot spots. But there are likely many other factors at play.

grim reaper is knocking on their doors and unfortunately, its not just the kids getting sick w/ the CV that the grim reaper is after, its the kids' parents and grandparents, friends, etc.

I hope the kids are happy and proud of themselves for inadvertently killing their family members, but somehow I doubt it.

That 311,000 is 90% above Illinois' case number.
I did not realize Florida blew by our state by that much.
Florida is about 65% more populous than us, but 90% more cases.
Their per capita number went right past us to.
I guess that, even though I knew about the massive spread there, I wasn't actual looking at the cumulative totals.
This is an incredible turnaround.

Your Governor is 100% smart. My Florida governor is 100% stupid, so we got a little lucky at 90% past your state’s numbers, with the clown running our show, we should be much worse.

The good thing that I see is people are taking control here, vastly more are wearing masks properly in close contact situations where social distancing isn’t possible.

On the downside, I hope that doesn’t let DeSantis off the hook in two years when he is up for re-election.

They therefore are much more sociable and mingle with other young people.
While in general young people are less seriously affected, each particular individual can't count on it.

in the poorer and wealthier areas are being very careful. That was something I noticed which was similar.

When they go out they are prepared and only do so for things they need.

Young people go out and have house parties if nothing is open. And these aren't all teens or 20s either. I see families with parents in 40s 50s with kids and other similar families having block parties.

Masks and gloves are nothing new for field workers, hospital workers, and food processors.

Most of the maskless people I see wandering our streets are affluent young males, maybe 15-25. They think they are invincible.
