(Bloomberg) Floridas Covid-19 outbreak is totally out of control, according to a Democratic representative, and the mayor of Los Angeles said his city is on the brink of new restrictions, comments that suggest the countrys months of trade-offs between the health of the community and the economy are far from over.
Speaking Sunday on ABCs This Week, Donna Shalala called for a lockdown of the third most-populous state and dismissed talk about reopening schools as ridiculous.
Its terrible, said Shalala, whose South Florida district sits within Miami-Dade County, one of the hardest-hit parts of the state.
On the Pacific coast, Mayor Eric Garcetti said hes considering another stay-at-home order for Los Angeles but emphasized that the city still had room in its hospitals and had been testing aggressively. Schools wont hold in-person classes until the city records at least 14 consecutive days of case decline and is removed from the states watch list, Garcetti told CNNs State of the Union. ............(more)

(9,074 posts)are not helping.
Not a single one has been seen wearing a mask and there are signs EVERYWHERE.
They range from early 20's to early 30's. Loads of partiers and the management won't do a damn thing.

(100,081 posts)The churches where I live are absolutely packed. And they are acting like there's nothing wrong. I drove by one the other day and there's at least 200 people going in and out of the building. They are the problem.

(9,074 posts)and the citizens got lazy or bored with complying as well. Newsom had a good system but we failed him.
He rolled out openings based on covid trends in each county which was a good plan. Unfortunately many couldn't or didn't continue safety measures and now we are in hot water again.

(3,479 posts)has a huge working class Latino population, and it's much more densely populated than people realize.
I still consider it a small miracle that it wasn't hit harder initially. LA reopened too hastily, but I have more faith that Garcetti/Newsom will shut it down if the situation doesn't improve. We're not Florida.

We have enough of those idiots pouring water back into the lifeboat the rest of us are trying to bail.
LA has more than it's share of Covidiots. So does the rest of the state.
Their sense of self-importance is far greater than any sense of social compact.

(89,252 posts)Most people do follow the rules in wearing masks where they have to such as when they go to businesses .
I work in an area where masks are required but a lot of people don't wear them unless they are going to go inside some business .
Crowded beaches, no masks .
Housing costs a lot in Los Angeles but people feel it's worth it because of the location and places they can go. So people aren't going to stay home.
These are mostly young people. The older people have been very careful .
I think they might have to start fining people .
