Comments from Young People that didn't know about John Lewis

I am seeing comments from young people on social media that ask why they did not learn about him in school . They were upset that they only just found out about him now when he passed away.

These are mostly very young people in their 20s and younger who have recently started to get active in politics because of blm, covid, trump, schools being closed, the school shootings etc. For most this year might be their first year voting if they are even old enough .

Learning about people like John Lewis is very important for people so they know how hard people fought for things. John Lewis was fighting until the day he died. He was involved in all the protests of just a month ago which for many of these young people was the first time they became involved. People need to know history. That there are people there trying to do the right thing and there are people who do bad things to stop them like McConnell .

I always hated when people blow off the whole thing as every politician is bad and lies . I found it lazy and an excuse for their lack of involvement or interest in doing the right thing.

I think learning about people like John Lewis would encourage people to vote also .

This is especially important right now when things feel so hopeless. Most of us did not face anything close to what he has in his lifetime.

Why did they not learn about Lewis? Decades of RW bastardization of our education curriculum as epitomized by the Rw Board in the State of Texas having control over almost all the textbooks used in the US. Now they are taking down our universities piece by piece. It is beyond disheartening.

and how this is why they must always vote in all elections.

I wish more people knew about the school boards and textbooks. A movie should be made about it.

The lesson that it is ignorant to hate someone because of the color of their skin has obviously not been taught nearly enough or well enough in the classrooms.
In my opinion, that is one significant reason racism persists and passes down as much as it does from generation to generation.

When Civil Rights legislation passed in the 60s, many including myself foolishly thought we'd won the war against racism. Then, when it persisted, many including myself thought "oh, it's a generation thing. It will disappear when the old racists die off". Fifty plus years later, that old generation has been replaced multiple times with younger racists.

We're in a war against racism. We seem to be winning that war but winning it so gradually, it's painful and not so easy to see or feel. Far too many continue to suffer and seemed destined to join Dr King falling short of ever reaching the Promised Land.

In November, we have an opportunity to win another battle for racism by kicking the Racist-In-Chief and the Racist Majority Leader and their minions out of Washington. That would be a great bookend to the legacy of John Lewis.
