After Chaotic Virtual Convention, Allen West (Yeah, That Allen West) To Lead Texas Republican Party

EDIT

West moved to Texas several years ago and has remained politically active here. In his final pitch to delegates, West promised to make the party better known nationally and adopt a more aggressive strategy against what he described as an increasingly extreme Democratic Party. "It's time that our Republican Party once again steps up and leads the way, not just in Texas, but all across the United States of America," West said. "It's time to make sure that the Republican Party of Texas is relevant again, that our message is out, that our message is being heard."

West also appealed to some in the party who have grown frustrated with their own leaders — namely Gov. Greg Abbott — for how they have responded to the coronavirus pandemic. West rallied delegates against what he said was the "tyranny that we see in the great state of Texas, where we have executive orders and mandates, people telling us what we can and cannot do, who is essential, who is not essential."

EDIT

But no issue overshadowed the closing weeks of the race like the party's insistence on conducting an in-person convention in Houston despite the coronavirus pandemic. After the convention center operator nixed the party's contract earlier this month, the party launched a legal battle to continue with an in-person convention. The party lost in the courts shortly before the convention was set to begin, leaving it with a short period to transition to a virtual gathering.

Despite promises that the party had a virtual backup plan all along, the convention opened Thursday with almost immediate technical problems, and the State Republican Executive Committee voted that night to pause the event for a day Friday to resolve the issues. When the convention came back Saturday, things were still rocky — delegates complained they had still not received credentials, committees took much longer than scheduled and livestreaming problems ruined speeches by some of the state's top elected officials.

The kind of people one admires, praises, respects, looks to as a leader, says a lot about a person.

And in this case...disgusting.

I do subscribe to their weekly newsletter, but that's all. I don't know if the email below went to the entire newsletter list, or someone grabbed my email address instead of an intended delegate. I never got any follow up emails, either apologizing or continuing to assume that I was a delegate.

Thank you for volunteering to serve as a delegate to the 2020 Republican Party of Texas Convention! As we head into our first ever RPT Virtual Convention, we’d like to talk you through some of the logistics for our CD and SD Caucuses. First, this will be an entirely virtual convention, we will not have in-person or hybrid caucus meetings.

That said, John and Hayden will manage our respective caucuses from the CollinGOP headquarters. In addition, we will have technology experts at headquarters to help those with technology or internet challenges. If you need help, you’re welcome to join us but you will need to register ahead of time at this link - CLICK HERE. But please, only come if you absolutely cannot make do on your own. We have very little space in headquarters so please remain home if you can. Also keep in mind that anyone who goes to headquarters will need to wear a mask and bring their own device to participate and vote.
