By 80s many high schools only taught 1 semester of Latin, primarily to teach kids Latin roots of English words to prepare them to take the SAT

3. I never took Latin, but I read books and magazines written in English,

where latin-derived words are sometimes used. Literate people should know the difference. However, we may not be super alert when writing, therefore everyone who writes for publication needs an editor. Online writing is not being edited. Wapo is particularly egregious in this area.

Fall 57, Freshman Week in college, good-looking guy was center of attention as he recited (in deep voice in Latin) the initial part of the Aeneid! So impressed the girls! At least it sure did me, i knew enough Latin to recognize what he was reciting (I recognized the 1st 2 lines!)
