General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsLast year when schools shut down, the district gave out computers to families
who didn't have computers. They also gave out cellular hotspots to the families who didn't have adequate internet.
They did not ask for these back when we got to Summer break, because they didn't want to have to reissue them in Fall if there was a distance learning option.
For the kids who come back to school in person there are no computers to use. They were all given out, as they needed to do. Kids use computers heavily and also take several hours of instruction a week on online platforms and use other platforms for testing throughout the year.
Kids who come back to school will not have computers, they have not had classroom copies of textbooks for years, and no one can say how the kids who come back will learn or be tested.
School is supposed to start in a little more than two weeks and the district doesn't even know how many kids will attend in person or online. There is no logistical way for them to get ready in time.
They have promised to provide PPE gear, plastic shields, and other items needed to make the schools safe. They have promised to address the needs of kids who normally take packed school buses, but they haven't done so.
Schools are further behind than they are in a normal year. They have not even addressed the supply lists that parents often provide for the schools. I can't find Lysol or Clorox wipes for my family, much less any extras for school. I usually also drop a couple hundred on supplies at Costco. Supplies that cannot be found.
We're not ready and doomed for failure and sickness.

(57,073 posts)Will issue one cloth mask per student, NOT require masks in classrooms, will NOT shut down or require quarrentine if someone is dxd with covid because "close contact" is required. 😳
Surreal!🤬

Give them a teacher and let her/him teach.
Like they used to do before corporations wormed their way into the classroom vis-a-vis canned ($$$) curriculum and proficiency tests.
You'll have kids who are can think for a change. What a concept.
Very good points.
I think it would invigorate teachers, too.
It has to get tedious presenting the same canned lessons, year over year.
I'm only a sub, but I know tons of teachers.
I think a lot would like this idea.
