It is very odd to see Mayor Ted Wheeler of Portland made out to be a hero and a good leader.

It's always very strange, of course, to see local news that one has been living get nationalized and decontextualized.

And thoroughly misunderstood.

That seems to have been glossed over.

Robert Evans was quite gleeful on his live stream when Wheeler got gassed.

But I have to give him props for going into the crowd last night. He knew he'd get an earful from the demonstrators, but he still went. I don't think he was counting on getting gassed. And maybe that will open his eyes to what the citizens are facing.

I hope that all of the people who have heard me make the wry comment in recent years that it’s never good when Portland is written about in The Guardian remember who they heard it from.
