https://www.stripes.com/news/us/senate-passes-defense-bill-without-funding-for-stars-and-stripes-1.638750WASHINGTON Funding for Stars and Stripes was not included in the Senates version of the 2021 National Defense Authorization Act passed Thursday, setting up deliberations with House members about the future of the news organization.
The Senates version of the NDAA, which passed 86-14, contains no language reversing the Pentagons February request to strip the roughly $15.5 million annual subsidy that the editorially independent news organization receives.
The Senates $740.5 billion version of the NDAA, which sets annual Pentagon spending and policy priorities, was passed just two days after the House approved its version of the NDAA for the same amount by a vote of 295 to 125. The Senate bill left that chambers Armed Services Committee without restoring funding for Stars and Stripes and no amendments regarding the news organization were added to the bill when it came up for a vote Thursday on the Senate floor.
The Houses version of the NDAA authorized $15.5 million in funding for Stars and Stripes and the House Appropriations Committees budget bill approved July 14 provided the same amount to fund the news organization in fiscal year 2021. The Senates Appropriations Committee has not yet released its bill.

Apparently so. Can't have investigative journalism and opinion from within the ranks.....

Of course.

and therefore in the future, it likely becoming another right-wing rag?
From: https://www.stripes.com/
Stars and Stripes is likely the only independent news media in the world to operate from within a nations defense department. Although the organization is authorized by the U.S. Department of Defense, Stars and Stripes content and coverage is completely independent of outside control or interference. Its singular coverage of the U.S. military offers first-hand accounts of life in peace and during times of war from the service members point of view.
Unique among the many military media sources operated by the Department of Defense, Stars and Stripes operates as a First Amendment media organization, free of outside control and censorship.
I'm sure Murdoch's News Corp would love to submit a bid......
