I saw this on FB - thought I'd share.
To justify slavery, we whites portrayed blacks as subhuman: primitive, stupid and servile.
To justify segregation, we whites portrayed blacks as morally corrupt: ignorant, predatory, and sinful.
After civil rights, we whites portrayed blacks as evil: drug addicts, gang bangers and welfare queens.
There has never been a point in our history when we whites have systematically and institutionally valued black lives as we do our own.
That's why #BlackLivesMatter. Period.
So many thoughts come to mind, but I will see what others think.

I notice that this has gotten some recs, but few comments. I just wanted to share my reaction.
As an African-American, this made me sick to my stomach.
It's so true, it's so painful. To recognize that these were the justifications for treating us like shit, and to really think about how COMPLETELY these stereotypes were broadcast so that everyone thought them, few white people challenged them - many white people anecdotally justified them.
We couldn't fight them. We had no power. We just had to deal with these labels of hate and disrespect that were laid upon us, like pig shit.
Sick to my stomach.

(6,150 posts)I have a few enlightened white friends on my page, and one of them responded. But I think it goes too far for a lot of people to be comfortable sharing it.
It is really affecting my day.

(11,744 posts)If you have seen the documentary 13th. One of the people talks about how those ideas are so pervasive that even Black people believed it about themselves.
I have seen other videos that discuss "scientific racism" and the whole idea of classification of "race" was a product of that justification for colonization. It is okay to take someone's land if they are less than human. They have to be "civilized" and if there is classification and ranking, then it is actually a "good thing". It is sick how the ideas of science and knowledge have been used to justify such horrific treatment of people.
