(149,504 posts)There's no access for fire equipment, and they won't have fireboats there. Yikes!

(6,791 posts)Temp Town Lake is an artificial lake used by rowers, kayaks, etc. That bridge span is about the worst place for a derailment due to it's location. Train crews usually switch near there so hopefully the crew managed to escape.

(6,791 posts)The bridge is partially collapsed.
Bumped up to 3 alarms.

(14,596 posts)They probably had to wait until they found out what was in the tank car next to the burning lumber load.

(5,087 posts)I have it from "reliable" sources that flammable liquids NEVER get hot enough to melt steel. So, I guess it must have been sabotaged by the city or the railway.

(21,810 posts)To see what type of cars are burning. The ones on the far right appear to have lumber loads. If there are any tank cars it could become a hazmat issue.

There also was a tanker car that fell off the bridge. It's not clear what the tanker was carrying, but Arizona's Family reporter Gibby Parra said it had a hazardous materials warning sign on it. A 3TV viewer told Parra he saw a yellow triangle sign indicating flammable materials.

(2,585 posts)Pure speculation on my part, but taking out bridges/supply lines is always one of the first targets of a military.
Seems like a lot of rail traffic is going to be affected by this.
Hoping it's just property damage and inconvenience and that no one is hurth.

(11,652 posts)I grew up in Phoenix. There was a point in the 80's when the Salt River was flooding and it was one of the few bridges that still worked.
Sad to see it go.

(6,438 posts)I've been watching the local news since they began their coverage. (Channel 3 for those who know the area.) The dark smoke can no longer be seen from my driveway. Thank goodness for Tempe Town Lake.
