Queen Elizabeth just granted a peerage to Yevgeny Lebedev, a Russian oligarch and son of a KGB Rezident. Vladimir Bukovsky, the heroic Soviet dissident who died last year, would have been infinitely more worthy of such an honor. What message does this send?

(16,903 posts)The Queen does not grant peerages; peers are named by the prime minister or the appointments commission; she conducts the ceremony. Boris Johnson & pro Brexits got help fr Russia for the yes vote. Johnson et al. suppressed the report confirming this until after recent election.

(20,006 posts)Is that anything like exchanging military aid to Ukraine for dirt on your opponent in a coming election?
Or moving U.S.troops out of Germany in exchange for helpful interference in a coming election?
Life is full of "trade-offs" and "the art of the deal."

(7,257 posts)These "honours" are Johnson's gift, as they have been for prime ministers before him. The queen just rubber-stamps them.
I'm surprised that "career diplomat" Carpenter for some reason was unaware of this or has chosen to let Johnson off the hook with this red herring. The continuing influence of ex-pat Russians' funding of the Tory Party has been well covered in the media. This is part of the quid pro quo.

(101,361 posts)Johnson gave this for support as mayor of London, and as PM. The Standard is a pretty shitty paper, in terms of sucking up to Johnson.
