According to Yertle, there are 20 R Senators who refuse to approve any more relief aid whatsoever. That means that D votes are needed to produce a Senate bill. But the prospect of getting 20 D Senators to vote for a R POS package is also nil.
Which puts Pelosis Heroes Act from May front and center, with Schumer in the drivers seat. The Heroes Act starts with 47 Yea votes - 45 Ds, 2 Indies - and needs only FOUR R votes to pass. Four. It will not be difficult to get 4 R votes for that bill to pass, and tRump will not veto any bill at this point.
Yertle has backed his caucus into a corner. He will need to put the House bill up for a vote AS IS, with no chance to insert amendments, because he will never be able to produce and pass a Senate version of the bill on which to conference.
He already knows this, and so does Schumer. In truth, it would be in Yertles best interest to pass the House bill as so doing provides the excuse for not adopting any of tRumps odious demands like the payroll tax cut, while also squashing the complaints of his own caucus as they left him no choice.

(7,447 posts)without some serious watering down of the House bill.
And probably so much so that the Dems won't agree.
So I'm pretty skeptical of anything passing anytime soon, if at all.

(82,849 posts)The Senate Republicans don't need to cater to anyone and pass a bill just so their constituents don't go starving, homeless, in the streets come autumn. They can run on their sterling record of governance the last two years, confident that voters will long remember their, uh . . . hmmmm.

(694 posts)go hungry, better yet for them, get evicted. It's pretty difficult to vote when you're homeless. Those aren't good republican voters anyway. Shut down the post offices, reduce the polling stations, gerrymandered districts, another recipe for success for the republican party. Besides they will just blame the democrats, fox and OAN will repeat that. Problem solved.

If Speaker Pelosi's CARES ACT doesn't pass then it's 1932 all over again. I've collected unemployment for only 2 weeks out of my entire 40+ year working career - so I'm not trying to scam anybody like Republicans say. My business is dead because of COVID. I'm pushing 60 so not many people are going to hire me.
Without the $600/week, I will not be able to make payments on loans, taxes, etc. I'm not the only one forced into this situation. The $600/week is working, both for me and the economy. Why change it?

(9,260 posts)I've had this feeling that Pelosi would prevail. Her political instincts and smarts are not to be underestimated. It looks like the R's overplayed their hand, not fully appreciating the dire circumstances, impact of their inaction, and mood in the country.
...and if we can bypass adopting any of drump's 'odious demands', so much the better!
