Sasse releases statement on legislating by executive orders

U.S. Senator Ben Sasse issuing a statement on legislating by executive orders.

“The pen-and-phone theory of executive lawmaking is unconstitutional slop. President Obama did not have the power to unilaterally rewrite immigration law with DACA, and President Trump does not have the power to unilaterally rewrite the payroll tax law. Under the Constitution, that power belongs to the American people acting through their members of Congress," said Sasse.

"Unconstitutional slop!"

Looks like even some Republicans aren't on board with Trump's "executive orders"....

They can decide whether or not they, themselves, are rendered irrelevant by pResidential fiat.

6. Senator Sasse Needs to Do His Job

Congress needs to do its job. When Obama issued the order on DACA, he stated that he could no longer wait on Congress to pass legislation. A year or so earlier, Senator McCain tried to get something passed to fix the DACA situation, his bid was promptly shelved.

Look at the Congress right now, they should be acting on funding, but instead they recessed and went home. Mitch McConnell is playing some sort of game by not pushing the repubs to do something. Instead he has let Trump move in with his executive orders. Some plan is up, is it to help Trump's failing chances to win the upcoming election?

The same thing goes for the tariffs. Congress should be setting the rules here, instead McConnell let Trump take over, now the American consumer is paying for this stupid move.

It is the fault of the Republicans in Congress, at one time both houses, now it is the Senate and mostly McConnell.

Vote, Vote, Vote - get some decent people in Congress and kick Trump and his grifters out!

like dicking people around didn't hurt their re-election polling. But now that it does...

It's nice to see some truth out of a Republican, but they'll always lie down until the feeling goes away.

He hates Communist China. That colors much of what he says. Here is an article on a recent commencement speech Sasse delivered at Fremont, NE, high school. Prides himself on being different. Reminds me some of Sen. Rand Paul.

They pounced on Obama for even hinting of bypassing Congress with executive orders, and with Trump tossing them around right and left, they know they will be on very shaky ground if they want to complain about any Biden-issued executive orders after keeping silent about Trump's abuse of them.

But don't fret--the vast majority of Republicans will brazenly defend their double standard. IOKIYAR, after all.
