My friend has a dumbass puke in his apt. complex who was mouthing off about "government

handout freebies" like SS and Medicare and my friend told him he paid for it as we all did and do. Dumbass looked mad and said he didn't believe him. My friend asked him if he knew what FICA stood for on his paycheck.

Dumbass didn't know.

Alrighty then...

Maybe he'd like to take the person into his home when the person can't make the rent or mortgage.

he retired (with a great pension, fought for and won by my friend). He and I have great phone conversations about poltics. My husband is so pissed off now he can't talk about politics any more except for a few comments. He is very aware of everything political going on, though. I married a good Democrat!

Being a self-employed businessman my entire adult life, I had to pay the entire 14% of my income into Social Security.
Now the Republicans want to take that from me, too?! What gangsters!

The 7% employer-paid portion is just an accounting trick. All employers will do the math when they make salary offers and you can rest assured this is figured in. So it creates downward pressure on your take-home pay.

Maybe.

I do wonder, though, if he could pick out the US on a map.

...taking so much of her paycheck. I then informed her, that it isn't a normal "tax" as we pay into it like a 401k, but unlike a 401k, it isn't empty once you pull all the money out. And was really just a tool to supplement pensions at the time.

She didn't get it and just railed on. So....I decided to go for the jugular. Told her it isn't fair that her and I paid into it and will get nothing when retire, just because some idiot told you its taking 7% of your paycheck and you should be mad. Add to that, her father who was retired and on medicare relied on it, and is still able to stay in his home as a result.

If Social Security didn't exist, she wouldn't be able to dip into it when she was paying "his bills". And with no medicare, he would probably have to sell the house of which she was beneficiary, and then got nothing.

The irony, when he did pass, she used a lot of the money she got to pay the IRS....as a realtor, she never put money aside for taxes. And of course, she wasn't happy that the Social Security money was gone, which she used to take her father on "trips".

Side note, found out her and husband got written out of her in laws will. And since neither have contributed much to Social Security, etc. She's going to get the minimum should she retire. Heard they are now looking out of state for property on the cheap, their house is paid for, so its going to be their income when they can't work anymore.

mostly got paid under the table and avoided taxes. Then came time to retire. Surprise, surprise. Very little coming in from Social Security, and of course those people never bothered to save anything on their own.

My mom is suffering as a result. My father always instructed his accountant to set things up to where he paid little to no taxes. And he obliged. After he hit his 50's, the accountant started ignoring it and put money in, when my father inquired as to why, he flat out told him, there will be a day you are no longer able to work and become a burden on your children. My father died at 58 due to lung cancer, a non smoker....pretty sure it was asbestos related, he never took the precautions when dealing with it.

After that, my mom was left basically penny less...but was also disabled. She had come into some inheritance during the real estate crash and we got her a home that was way under valued..but kept her name off. Then we put her on disability...which should have been done years earlier, medicare, food stamps....you name it.

The irony, her younger siblings rail against government assistance...yet if it wasn't for it, she would be homeless, and probably dead since she would be placed in a nursing home. Side note, one of her siblings said she deserved more inheritance because she was used to living a better life style. Can't make this shit up.
