(12,480 posts)Somehow these collective narcissist movements,
and the narcissists in the groups of collective narcissists have to be dealt with. Either by undermine the collective source of it or finding a way to contain it so it cannot harm other people.
Or we may be threatened by movements on the right forever undermining the rule of law and our consitution and every advance we make twords inclusion, equality and economic justice. ..forever.

(14,855 posts)It describes many right-wingers and Trump-supporters extremely well.
Other groups too, but generally to far lesser degrees.
This article proposes a new theoretical framework for the reviewed state‐of‐the‐art research on collective narcissismthe belief that the ingroups exceptionality is not sufficiently appreciated by others. Collective narcissism is motivated by the investment of an undermined sense of self‐esteem into the belief in the ingroups entitlement to privilege. Collective narcissism lies in the heart of populist rhetoric. The belief in ingroups exceptionality compensates the undermined sense of self‐worth, leaving collective narcissists hypervigilant to signs of threat to the ingroups position. People endorsing the collective narcissistic belief are prone to biased perceptions of intergroup situations and to conspiratorial thinking. They retaliate to imagined provocations against the ingroup but sometimes overlook real threats. They are prejudiced and hostile. Deficits in emotional regulation, hostile attribution bias, and vindictiveness lie behind the robust link between collective narcissism and intergroup hostility. Interventions that support the regulation of negative emotions, such as experiencing self‐transcendent emotions, decrease the link between collective narcissism and intergroup hostility and offer further insights into the nature of collective narcissism.
Edit: And it has the traits of FASCISM too.

(12,480 posts)Is like living in a fascist regime, just that it's your family suffering through it.
Look at bullies and how it's for kids that get abused by the bullies. Or a toxic workplace...
Look at how abusers treat non- narcissist people they abuse.
The parelles are stark between them.

(14,855 posts)... in collective America over the last several years:
"... leaving collective narcissists hypervigilant to signs of threat to the ingroups position."
With Fox News and others stoking the nonsense -- e.g., reporting on the supposed "war against Christmas".
I'm not sure it's always a personality disorder from birth. Propaganda and praise for the behavior -- another thing done by Fox News to assure their viewers that THEY are good and "real" Americans -- can cause it too.
Religious people who do things like pray for their sports teams are pretty narcissistic too. They think they've got some all-powerful entity at their beck and call. Good grief.
