July 27-Aug 7: enrolled 4536 trial participants
Need 30,000 total
Expect first doses completed in September
Second doses 28 days later
Important point is you have to wait 28 days after the first shot before given the second shot, then wait a few weeks for the shot to kick in, because it takes time to take effect, then wait for the participants to go out into the community to see if they get infected or not
Pfizer believes they could go to the FDA in October, but the experts CNN spoke with do not believe that can happen
Dr. Fauci believes it is possible to have something in December, but not ready for the public until the first quarter of next year

(10,279 posts)supplied by TrumpCo in mid-Oct. It will not conform to vaccine standards, but it will be intensely marketed. It will also have this statement on its package: "The user bears full responsibility for the efficacy of this product and holds TrumpCo and its officers harmless for all adverse effects."

(100,080 posts)They are largely anti-vaccination on the side of conspiracy theories. They paint Bill Gates as public enemy #1, have smeared and threatened to murder Dr. Fauci, destroyed 5G cell phone towers (because reasons), and believe that a vaccine is the gateway to the mark of the beast. So it won't be a winning talking point for them.

(100,080 posts)Even though it's been proven time and time again to be total bullshit, so there is that.

(34,661 posts)if what info that has been released says that the testing groups do not include non White Population study groups. If this is the fact,we are in for a long slog.

(1,893 posts)July 27-Aug 7: enrolled 4536 trial participants ... is the number who received the first dose.
I received the first dose in July and second dose will be August 27.
While the full 30,000 first doses wont be completed till September, the second doses will have already started.
If it DOESN'T work they will likely know in September

(44,973 posts)by covid that they get statistical significance from ~5,000 people between those who got vaccine and placebo?

(92,219 posts)which doesn't require a booster, by October
Because it isn't a live virus I don't think the safety concerns are going to present a problem, and because it already made it through phase 1 and phase 2
The issue I think will take time will be to determine effectiveness. Not only T-cell immunity, but also B-cell antibodies to see how long it is protective
I think December is a more realistic assessment, though I can see front line workers and high risk patients receiving it before it is released to the public before then
I applaud you for taking part in the Clinical Trials

(44,973 posts)They need to compare actual infection rates in those who got the vaccine to those who got the placebo. That's not going to be done in a month.

Im referring to the media here.

(82,849 posts)But no horse race, no ratings. Some time around March of next year some media personalities will quietly admit that they knew all along that a vaccine in time for election day was impossible, but they reported it anyway to keep ratings up.

(32,688 posts)Been working on it for many, many years and it is a close virus to Covid-19.
How long have they been working on a vaccine for the AIDs virus, 30 years?

(92,219 posts)virus is new. There have been investigations since SARS and MERS came on the horizon though. SARS burned out on its on, and they actually have an unapproved vaccine for MERS.
Sars CoV2 is a new strain of coronavirus not previously seen in humans. Except for SARS and MERS, the other strains of coronavirus usually only cause mild symptoms like the common cold. Because there was no life threatening urgency as with Covid 19, there has been no major push for a "cold virus", of which there are something like 250 strains. Focusing on one specific corona virus, Sars CoV2, and the knowledge gained from investigations in SARS and MERS have enabled a much quicker process for vaccine development for this.
It is very likely that the result of the development against Sars Co V2 will result in vaccines against other corona virus such as the "common cold"

(92,219 posts)this data. In addition, it does not serve any pharmaceutical company to release a vaccine that isn't effective. Trump does NOT control the results
He has continually tried to do that with Hydroxychloroquine, and every prominent researcher, and medical journal have not only refuted his bullshit, but have demonstrated through multiple clinical trials that he is wrong
That some people still subscribe to what this jackass says is amazing but not surprising since 20% of the population believes President Obama isn't a citizen, and his religious faith is Muslim

(7,850 posts)I remember polio and the March of Dimes..and I remember standing in a line in my first grade classroom scared the shot was going to hurt and I was going to cry...fast forward 65 years and yes everything moves a lot faster but it does the pharmaceutical industry no good if the population refuses to be inoculated for fear of side effects..thirty years ago AIDS was raging and we still don't have a vaccine..viral anti-supressents yes, but no vaccine ..so how after less than a year's worth of testing will there be a viable covid vaccine? there won't be...

(21,717 posts)I would, but only for this vaccine

(7,850 posts)bc now conventional wisdom has it at one vaccine and one booster...and that's today...tomorrow it could be an oral something...and will it be an inoculation or a virus symptoms suppressor...nobody knows...
