As Trump falters, Democrats and Biden eye an elusive prize: Texas

(Reuters) - As polls show Texans increasingly frustrated with President Donald Trump's response amid a massive resurgence in coronavirus cases, Democrats say they have a real chance to turn a long-held dream into reality: winning the state's presidential contest for the first time in more than four decades.

In recent weeks, Joe Biden's campaign has aired television ads specifically aimed at Texans – the first time a Democratic presidential candidate has done so in a quarter-century, according to the state party – and made its first hires there.

Texas is among the states targeted by a $280 million fall advertising blitz the campaign unveiled last week, part of a broader strategy aimed at putting Republican-leaning states, including Georgia, Iowa and Ohio, in play ahead of the Nov. 3 election against the Republican Trump.

With polls showing Biden holding a national lead over Trump and effectively tied in Texas, Democrats say a concerted effort in the state could expand his viable paths to the White House.

I'm still inclined to believe Texas will go to Trump but I'd be happy as hell if Biden were the first Democrat since Jimmy Carter to win Texas.

I think Texas is purple - bordering more on blue-purple than red, but the margin is so slim, the republican dirty trick machine will be able to overcome it.

I don't think we can win Texas, and there are other areas we need to win, but I guess they know best.

If they have the money to cover all the bases, then go for it.

Even if trump ends up winning Texas, aggressively campaigning here will carry down ballot people across the finish line. When Beto lost to Cruz by 300,000 votes for senate in 2018, dozens of Democratic candidates won in places across the state that had not been competitive in 20 years. Gaining seats in the national congress and the state house/senate are all important for the long term changes we need.

of dollars to defend states that *should* be in the bag for any Republican candidate.

They've already spent close to a billion dollars and have very little to show for it.

But if we can flip some Congressional Districts and turn the state legislature, it will go a long way.

All the boasting of which states were going to flip blue. How about we discuss this after the election?
