Plan when and how youll vote. Plan for a long wait and plan on protecting yourself with more than a mask if youre voting in person.
Check voter registration or register to vote.

(44,973 posts)Are there other protection methods I don't know about? Mask, goggles, gloves. What else is there?

(19,565 posts)Simple safety goggles and gloves, considering the environment would be useful.

(44,973 posts)Goggles, mask, gloves is a must.
Ideally mask should be something better than a cloth mask.

(19,565 posts)A mask isn't enough if we're waiting in lines where some folks might not adhere to the guidelines, and gloves when using a voting machine which may not be properly sanitized is prudent.
We all have to be as safe as possible at the polls and adding eye protection and gloves may be just the extra layers we need. We're all in this together and all that matters here is we have a safe plan in place to get out and vote in whatever way we can.
I'm in a vote in person only state unless you're over 65 years of age. I've thought long and hard about it, and I've come up with this three layer plan to be able to vote safely.

(10,207 posts)I live close to the border between states, not sure if both do mail in voting, but Im hoping some local group will arrange rides for people who need them and Ill volunteer to provide rides. For my ballot Ill mail it in immediately and will take a picture of it. Id recommend everyone take a time stamped picture of their ballot. Dont know if that will do any good. But I suppose if there is contention it would be good if millions of people could send pictures of their ballots in.

(171,070 posts)I will be dropping it off in a ballot box that will be out there, so I hear. I'll find out but one way or the other I will be voting and won't depend on the PO unless something gives.

(6,251 posts)COVID-19 is a valid excuse in West Virginia. The ballots will be mailed out from the county courthouse in mid-September, and I'll return it as soon as I receive it.
We can track our ballot requests and ballots on line. Handy!

(34,136 posts)Wearing a mask and my glasses, I put my driver's license and a card with my choices in my jean pocket, went to the closest library branch - which had only a very short line) - and voted.
The set up was good - they had a man at the entrance enforcing the mask rule with a bottle of sanitizer (I didn't use it since I had just gone to the restroom ten feet away and thoroughly washed my hands) and he gave me a little stylus. When my turn came he sent me to the next desk, where they had a plexiglass panel.
The poll worker had me show my driver's license, I wrote my signature on their little device with the clean stylus which then was put in a container to be cleaned. The poll worker printed my ballot, put it in a folder that she put a sticker on lightly. I was to apply the sticker on the booth I used so the person going around sanitizing them would know which had been used.
Then I carried my ballot and the folder to the scanner, fed the ballot in, and put the folder in a basket. Then I picked up my "I VOTED EARLY" sticker and left the room by a different door. Very smooth, no crowding, and every body was very relaxed. Oh, I did thank the poll workers for being there and keeping voters safe.
This was a different early voting location than I usually go to. I had a dentist appointment and this one was more on the way than the other one, but there was still no crowding and all was good.

(34,136 posts)Adapting it to the needs of the pandemic was actually very easy. All that changed were plexiglass screens masks, and social distancing, which was not hard given that the system had the voter handling the ballot from right when it was printed until it went in the scanner. They have always had a one way path through the voting locations, which simplifies things immensely.

(34,136 posts)Which makes sense because it prevents crowding. The new supervisor has been really pushing voting by mail, but getting the ballot to their office reliably would expose me more than just voting early - and be a longer drive.

(3,384 posts)I would bring:
1. Small, light folding chair (I bought a green folding camp chair for $6 at walmart)
2. Snacks, drinks (in a small cooler bag). Water for hydration
3. Call some friends and go together (in case we need to take pee breaks and plus, it makes it easier to pass the time). Safer in numbers too.
4. Cell phones, extra battery packs. So important to have. Cell phone in case an incident arises. Video tape EVERYTHING.
5. Bring ID, prooer documentation. make sure ID is current and not expired.
6. MASKS. Multiple ones in case it gets wet or dirty.
7. Be mindful of what you wear. Some voting places do not allow political tshirts. Check with your precinct and local laws.
8. If you play a small, portable instrument, maybe bring it and have an impromptu concert?
9. Sunblock, hat (I live in the desert. This is a must.)
10. Book, ipad, cards, small travel game....
11. MEDS. If you think you may have to be there for excessively long times, take your meds with you. Just in case.
11. tote bag to keep it all in
