Antibody test in Sturgis gives peace to rally goers
Wednesday is traditionally the busy turnaround day for visitors, early arrivals are hitting the road, but a new group is just arriving. And with the 80th annual rally bringing in hundreds of thousands of visitors the impact locally and nationally may never be known.
Theres a large group of people that are leaving today and they want to get tested on their way out of town, says Michael McVay from Americup.
And tucked away in a Chevrolet Liberty parking lot on the western edge of Sturgis... a sign not of the rally.. but of the pandemic.. a five-minute antibody test for 45 dollars.
It really provides a lot of peace of mind for folks that are concerned about going back home to loved ones so they can be tested and find out if theyve had some exposure, says McVay.
McVay says the test has a 97 percent accuracy and have yet to have anyone test positive, he also says antibodies begin to show up a week after COVID exposure.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
So the rally started a week ago and if you contracted Covid on that day they may be able to tell you. Anything after that and they probably won't know. But they are saying that it is very comforting to the people taking the test....for $45 a pop.
I would think most people only stay a long weekend or a few days. That going away Covid test mean nothing! This McVay guy is from Maclean power systems, a utility company??? Did they just set this up to make a buck?

(111,098 posts)1. Sounds like a good way to make money, mostly.
If it takes a week for the antibodies to show up.

And I'm guessing the 97% accuracy rate is inaccurate. I've read 50% at best for instant tests.
