(68,582 posts)I never thought I'd be glad for Kavanaugh's presence on the Court.

(81,296 posts)I've been surprised by him a couple of times. My guard isn't dropping, and I keep score. I don't forget the earlier stuff. But that means I don't forget a good move later on, either.
Perhaps we're seeing a human version of the broken clock that's still right twice a day...

(46,051 posts)But I wouldn't be surprised if Roberts were sick of at least some of the excrement they send his way.

(81,296 posts)Remember, this will ALWAYS be known as and written about and described and referred to as "The Roberts Court." It always seems to be nicknamed after whoever is Chief Justice. Like the Warren Court (Earl Warren, 1953-69), the Burger Court (Warren Burger, 1969-86), or the Rehnquist Court (William Rehnquist, 1986-2005). It's been the Roberts Court since John Roberts was nominated to be Chief Justice, by dubya.

Heck, if MY name was on the Supreme Court, and all its decisions and rulings and writings and actions and discussions from now on through all of America's future carried MY name, I'd damn well want my name to stand for something that was transcendent, that stood the test of time, and not the political winds (or windbags) of the moment. I can't help but suspect that this goes through his head every time he enters that building. He knows this is for the history books and the legal journals and the law schools - and this little "insignificant" annoyance we all know as the Constitution.

(18,486 posts)The legislature - Democrats and Republicans - had all agreed to a consent degree loosening the requirements for mail-in ballots. The GOP tried to stop it.
It's kind of hard to argue that an outside political group should undo a bipartisan agreement between elected officials. Of course, Alito, Thomas and Gorsuch thought they should be allowed to do just that.
This is a great outcome, but the circumstances are almost ideal. I'm not sure how the Roberts and Kavanaugh would rule in a case involving a dispute between legislators.
But I'll cheer this one anyone since any victory is a good thing!

(6,592 posts)It may not be the correct legal term, but to me as a layman it's like the GOP didn't have "standing" to block what state officials had agreed to do.

(18,486 posts)The Court ruled that the state election officials supported the decree and no state official objected, and thus, the Republican Party lacked "a cognizable interest in the States ability to enforce its duly enacted laws." In other words, the GOP had no standing to get all up in the state's business.
You nailed it, Layman!
