New York Airport to Be Renamed After Frederick Douglass

Monroe County legislators voted August 11 to change the name of the Greater Rochester International Airport to the Frederick Douglass-Greater Rochester International Airport after a Rochester resident petitioned to commemorate the local abolitionist.

Richard Glaser, the petitioner, collected nearly 5,000 signatures to change the name of the airport.

“Frederick Douglass holds an unparalleled place of prominence in the history of Rochester and Monroe County,” Monroe County Executive Adam Bello said in a statement last month.

“He called Rochester home for more than a quarter-century and it was here that he founded and published his North Star newspaper, wrote some of his greatest works and speeches and continued his life-long fight for emancipation, suffrage, equality and human rights. His world-renowned leadership on social reform is a legacy that lives on throughout our community.”

I've been in & out of there a few times.
Did some consulting at a private label laundry formulator near Rochester.
Planes were regularly loaded with Kodak folks going to or from corporate HQ.
Nice little airport, kept clean.
Renaming it for Douglass is a good idea.

Lots were at one end of the terminal. I could literally get to my care 90 seconds from the counter!
I've been to other small airports, and they're all super convenient!

I was going to comment along the lines of “Don’t they normally name these things after deceased people?”, but your version is much funnier. I immediately got an image in my head; tRump at one of his pressers inviting him to the WH: “I hear he’s been doing great things, we’d like to get him here to congratulate him in person. We can do that?” (looking around), “We’ll get him here, ok...”, and all the stooges on stage just nodding their craven heads; yes sir, we’ll get right on that...

Would it be any more bizarre then some of the things we’ve seen?

the United States from itself, Lincoln defining the political sphere, Grant the military sphere, and Douglass the moral sphere, with some overlap between them.

I also can't wait to take corporate names off of parks, arenas, etc. and replace them with the names of real heroes we need to honor and perpetuate the memory of.

Douglas Park, now Douglass Park, had been named after Stephen Douglas, a pro-slavery Senator. They can completely flip the meaning by adding just one letter to the signs!

Not a huge Chicago connection but he did give a great speech at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition.
