What a bizarre time we live in - COVID interruptions mean no canning supplies anywhere near where I live - right in the middle of the harvest for gardeners, and farmers market produce peak.
So, a few generous, lovely gardening friends found supplies near where they lived (Utah, Michigan) and went to the post office early Monday and sent them to me priority - 2 day delivery. Meaning they paid significant extra. I also found some on ebay and ordered them last week and they went into the mail last weekend - again, priority.
Here we are on Thursday, I've got 60 plus pounds of home grown heirloom tomatoes on the verge of going overripe (I have to look every few hours for the "leakers" - it is day 4 from the trip to the post office - judging from tracking numbers, they may arrive tomorrow - or Saturday - or even Monday. Meaning much of my harvest will have to be used in different preservation methods (some I've already used - we love having our home canned quarts for winter soups).
Granted, this is a minor fuck up - it isn't medicine, it isn't life or death, it isn't a check I'm waiting for that is needed for basic supplies. If I come across as a whiny baby, I'm sorry...
But it is a real world example that this isn't just a rumor, or over reacting - this is a crime being perpetrated by our so called president and his minions. It is a canary in a coal mine for what is likely to happen during the election.
Once again, after saying it nearly daily for more than three and a half years - how can this be happening? How can it be allowed? How faulty is our constitution that a destructive, mentally - psychologically sick person can be allowed to run roughshod over decency and cause so much damage for so many?

(17 posts)Instead of grasping how the Cheeto is dismantling the USPS, they'll use this as evidence that the USPS *needs* to be dismantled.
It's a cult of uneducated people who are incapable of independent thought, or even basic logic.

(14,492 posts)They're using the same technique from many times before, with a primary objective of neutering, dismantling or privatizing functions of the federal government (except for a few they want to keep to support big business interests).
One of the first goals is to reduce public confidence in the agency and they do that by combinations of defunding, firing experienced people and appointing incompetent new ones. Therefore the agency becomes disfunctional and slow to respond. After that point, Republicans become highly vocal with their criticisms.
The general public sees very little of this while it's happening and generally only become alarmed after it's too late.

Disparate Republican media ownership is the root cause of our problems.

(38,958 posts)I have a small parcel that I ordered on July 24 still sitting in the regional facility in Industry City, CA. Thankfully it wasn't time sensitive and it will get here when it does I suppose.
There are things I would like to order from a few places but with the postal slowdown, they will simply have to wait or not get ordered at all.
I have a new nephew today, but hesitate to send the parents a gift using the Post Office as I would like him to receive it before he is four years old.

(32,626 posts)the GOP know exactly what they're doing, and how to do it. Trump's brain isn't capable of coming up with this kind of carnage. Even if, the post office were restored tomorrow, various states would find a way to stop people from voting. They don't need Trump to do that, but the state courts are very helpful, as are the Judges hand-picked by those whose job it is find the right-minded for the job. If it were only Trump, we wouldn't be here.

(14,857 posts)I don't think anyone has claimed that all mail is being delayed everywhere. Most mail is still being delivered on time - for now.
