(4,959 posts)the drive-up kind, on the loop of an apartment complex near where I work, and I used it regularly for years to drop off mail on my way home.
All of a sudden it was gone, a couple weeks ago I guess. The cement block it was on is still there, but no mailbox.

(11,270 posts)Around here the letter carriers collect at every stop. Collection boxes are antiques now.

(4,465 posts)I can find only one mail box in my town.

(11,270 posts)some businesses drop off their mail. Only one dropbox here now too. Except in front of the post office which now only has out of town. Local mail goes miles away to be returned who knows when? Like that for many years. Postal managers don't want to collect mail anymore, only when the carrier stops at your address.

(4,465 posts)if educational films I saw in school were accurate. When postmen walked routes, mail boxes had to functions: 1) The usual place for people to drop mail in. 2) A place for mail to be stored along a postman's route. Trucks would drive around, load mail into the boxes, then the walking postman would refill his bag for the next part of his walking route.

(3,803 posts)There are drop boxes everywhere for ballots in Oregon -- I go by the one at my local library branch every day while on my morning walk.

(33,345 posts)And then a new one that allowed you to drop mail in from your car without touching the handle was installed. It has a curb-side chute in addition to the regular door.
Could be Covid-prompted and less nefarious than it seems.

(5,810 posts)One was for larger parcels and packages. A few years ago they decided to replace them. And three new, larger boxes showed up. We began to see efforts to stop a leak in the seams. Every time we came to drop off mail, we saw thicker and thicker layers of clear caulk. We finally gave up using those boxes because we were never sure the mail would stay dry. Even though drive-up drop off was more convenient, my husband always takes our outgoing mail to the inside box which drops directly into the mail sorting area.
Our mail delivery recently is slow (sometimes). In the last week or so it has come earlier in the day, usually by 4 p.m. A few weeks ago, delivery happened as late as 7:30 p.m. I guess the no overtime rule is being enforced so they get it out but if quitting time comes, they head back in??

(58,656 posts)One I can think of is right outside of the local DSHS office-state health & human services office. Makes sense, since a lot of folks going there are financially challenged.
Other than that, I can't think of where public mailboxes are located. I imagine usage is way down.
