(3,040 posts)It was sort of like break a leg amongst GOP politicians. Basically pray for rain so less people come out of vote, in particular older or poorer folks who might not be able to or want to walk or take transit in inclement weather.

(7,447 posts)to vote by mail...and that most Republicans plan or want to vote in person.
So, the thinking is, destroy the former to give more power to the latter.

(11,062 posts)I want to vote by mail. If not, I want to drop off my ballot in advance. But I'll be damned if they (or COVID) keeps me from voting. And I think the crowds in Georgia, Kentucky and Wisconsin show that there are a lot of Dems who feel the same way.

(4,462 posts)... if you request a mail in ballot, you cant later decide Not to use it and instead vote in person. You might be able to cast a provisional ballot, but most say that is a wasted effort - the provisionals are never counted.
Polls are showing that Dems are overwhelmingly more likely to try Voting by mail and avoid the congestion of voting in person because we generally believe that COVID 19 is a real thing. Many Republicans are not constrained by that reality. But it will be new to the vast majority of them. If they can make it more difficult to do, more confusing, and less reliable, they stand to disenfranchise perhaps millions of votes, most of which would probably be for Biden/Harris.

(7,447 posts)imagine...tens of millions of D voters request mail in ballots.
They send them in...and many of them are not counted, or lost.
Let's say these voters are paying so much attention that they are tracking it, they see they voted weeks ago but it hasn't arrived, or they fear it wasnt counted, so they decide, I'll just vote in person instead.
Nope, sorry, you requested a mail in ballot, so you can't vote in person.
Motivation only helps if people are informed ahead of time BEFORE they request a mail in ballot. People need to be told there is a risk here. Does that mean no one should vote mail in? No, of course not, but they should know that the risk of their vote going missing or being rejected is higher than in probably all prior elections.

Want you vote to count?? absolutely you do ....so
1. Vote early in person
2. Hand carry your completed mail in ballot to its appropriate destination..do not put it back in the mail regardless how early it is
3. Vote on Election Day, be prepared for long lines- take food, water, a lawn chair, possibly a blanket, umbrella if needed. BE PREPARED

(22 posts)I think Trump thinks if people have to go to the polls the dem's are less likely to go because they are more worried about standing in long lines in close quarters during a pandemic. He knows his people aren't quite as bright and would have no qualms whatsoever standing in long lines with no social distancing. In fact they would consider it a badge of honor to do so. Trump could care less if it kills off many thousands to do so.

(2,904 posts)I seem to remember that more Republicans generally vote by absentee/mail-in than their Democratic counterpart.
In this instance; however they know that the pandemic has created a dramatic increase in voters of both parties desire to vote by mail; and we know full well how large turnout favors Democratic candidates.
They know what theyre trying to prevent.

(36,333 posts)Trump's base resides in rural areas and a study has found that a higher percentage of mail in ballots cast in rural areas arrive too late to be counted then in urban areas. A slow down in mail service will likely increase that percentage.
Trump's strongest age demographic is the elderly and the elderly are more likely to vote by mail.
"The one exception is related to age, where voters older than 65 are more likely to use them than younger voters. (Note that some states, even those that generally require an excuse to vote absentee, allow older voters to vote by mail without an excuse.)"
