LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) - The confederate monument will remain on the grounds of the Calcasieu courthouse.

The Calcasieu Police Jury voted 10-4 at a special meeting to leave the South’s Defenders Monument where it stands. Police Jury President Tony Guillory, whose vote acts as a tie breaker when needed, wanted the record to show he was in favor of removing the statue.

A motion was before the police jury to consider moving the monument from the grounds of the courthouse.

A large number of residents spoke prior to the vote.

Lake Charles is a city of about 75000 in Southwest Louisiana about three hours from New Orleans.
