Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsHad a chat with my post man this morning
He had absolutely no clue what was going on. He told me he "never votes." I told him he might want to consider doing so this time and to vote blue!
He seems like a very nice fellow who told me he will retire when he turns 66 next summer.
So, of course, I enlightened him. He was horrified and asked "where do you get that kind of information?" So I told him normal (non-Faux outlet names).
I kept repeating to "vote blue to save your pension."
He was particularly disturbed to learn that DeJoy is a logistics guy who has contracts with companies are direct competitors of the USPS. That stung.
Anyway, he said he has not seen any difference in the way things are being done. He said they cut overtime years ago in this area (Memphis suburb). He said, if you are out on a route and your time is up, they literally send out a contract worker to relieve you of your route. And said they pay overtime to contractors but not to employees.
He said management does not communicate with workers at all, so he knows nothing about any of what's going on.
I did ask him to talk to his coworkers to inform them to VOTE BLUE.
That's about all I got out of him, except maybe one blue vote!

That "I don't vote" attitude is quite prevalent here. REVOLTING!

(3,256 posts)The vast majority of Letter Carriers are strong Democrats and good at volunteering to GOTV and donating to the union PAC. And like any large group there are exceptions. We even had some RR nut jobs in the APWU but not many. I really don't think you are going to make much difference to a 65 year old that is going to retire soon. For some the sports page is as far as they get with the news. Most Americans still think the USPS is part of the federal government even though it was split off in 1973. The president of the Saint NALC told me exactly how this game was going to be carried out in about 2010. His predictions were entirely accurate. The 10 billion a year prepayment for retirees insurance served two purposes. It left the government off the hook for when they privatized it and made sure their budget was stretched so that if a disaster hit they would be set up to fail. It's a textbook case of disaster capitalism. One of the problems is that if they show a profit they have to turn it over to the treasury so they can't keep reserves for hard times.

Not one single person I have ever spoken to here has known that they can register to vote online with a drivers license or state ID #. Nor has anyone known that non-drivers will be (usually) given a free state ID for voting purposes.
The attitude is usually, "I don't bother." I keep telling they'd better, as elections have consequences!
And I always, always ask them to spread the work among friends and family members. (People usually do what they are told, it seems.)

--Who is our representative in Congress?
--Who is Sec of State?
--What are the three branches of gov't?
--What's Pelosi's title?
--Who's Chief Justice?
All stuff readers of DU would know in a hearbeat and cant fathom not knowing.
I mentioned to a friend last week that I needed to get home from our breakfast because I wanted to see some of the Sally Yates hearing. She asked me "who is that?".
Most people are trying to get by with life, and you and I are the weird ones with our obsession about politics. A couple days after the 2016 presidential election, I went over to my mother's and my brother was there. He commented on my sorrow and asked why "my panties were in a bunch." Sometimes, I see the light really go on in their heads and it's exciting, even though it's just a brief encounter.
One young Black girl working at a restaurant during the time Stacey Abrams was running for gov of GA was mildly excited, but when I mentioned Oprah was campaigning for Stacey, her eyes got about the size of dinner plates and she repeated her name, as if it were some sacred phrase.
I guess I'm just different. Given the choice between Oprah and the 1st AA woman running for governor on a major party ticket, the latter would be more exciting, but I've never been so much into celebrities.
I hope she went back to GA where she said she was registered and voted for Stacey and I hope she became interested in politics, but one never knows.

(14,856 posts)I BRIEFLY worked for a local GM plant after high school, and quickly realized it was for the dogs... especially after dues were taken out of my paltry checks too. The much better-paid older workers would boast about trips in their big boats and all kinds of stuff, like they didn't give a damn that such a life would forever be impossible at my low pay rate. They got theirs!
People have been self-absorbed, with little sense of community, for years.
Edit: My oldest brother worked at Wright-Patt AFB after college, and he described most of his coworkers as being whiny Republicans too. They'd talk about how it was so awful, and a young guy like himself should seek better opportunities at privately-owned businesses. My brother eventually followed their advice and regretted it. He had some well-paying jobs at places like Honeywell and Cray Research (supercomputers) as an engineer, but he said it was a lot of hard work with long hours... and with no real security. He looked back on WPAFB and said, "Those crybabies had it easy! That was the best job in my whole life! I even had some leftover energy after work to play softball with those guys!" (My brother also went blind in middle-age, which probably would've been accommodated at WPAFB.)

(14,856 posts)... brought up breaks, reminding us that they weren't required to offer them and we should appreciate how they're so nice to us.
That came from the people sitting on their butts constantly, irritated if anyone interrupted their personal chit-chatting to actually make a decision on the production floor. (The occasions when production workers caught glimpses of their idleness in their air-conditioned offices. And it's not like they made good decisions in those situations, but it was required for them to be "the deciders" sometimes. If the more knowledgeable employees did it, they'd get in trouble.)

Quit pushing your political garbage. These so called Democrats you endorse are the same ones pushing the pandemic for political purposes. The ones that you say care about union jobs are the same ones costing us union jobs. You cant have it both ways!!

(15,290 posts)There always seems to a lot of consternation when word of top level management shake ups comes out, but these managers are so far removed from the day-to-day operations of any gov't agency, they have little impact on the civil servants actually doing the work.
AFAIK, the mail trucks are equipped with GPS so the post office manager knows where every truck is. The mailcarries are tracked pretty relentlessly it seems.
When I worked in DoD, assistant secretary for this, that and the other thing came and went. So did SecDefs. Little changed for those of us peons doing the work where the rubber hits the road. I still chuckle at the time all our command's managers went on a retreat for the day. Those of us left behind were happy we had an entire day to do our work and not be bothered by "the bosses".

What did somewhat amaze me, though, was that this carrier was astounded to learn what's happening with the USPS! And that he did not know where to look for news! 🤯 but I was happy to inform him.
His body language, questions, and peaked listening told me he was intently interested.
As a carrier of nearly 20 years set to retire next year, I'm hoping to get he and his family & coworkers to vote blue! Wouldn't it be something if chumputin's attack on our beloved USPS turned TN blue in Nov? It could happen, if and only if, people get off their asses & register & vote!
Perhaps chumputin is worried. I saw & posted an article yesterday informing that kanye west filed papers to be on ballot in TN. same is true for a few other red states. Speaks volumes, I think!
Anyway, I will keep talking with my carrier, encouraging him to read from a reliable base of news sources, to register and vote blue, as well as to share the info he learns with family, friends & coworkers. He just might, as this could well cost him his retirement!

(15,290 posts)a lot of ex-military and is run like the military, very controlling of its employees. Also that the rank and file hates management. I have no first hand knowledge, just what I've heard said.
I'm not really surprised that a mailman wouldn't know all the current machinations. I'd say that's because whatever is happening is not really affecting them. They're just coming in to work each day and doing their job.
The people who would really know work at the sorting facilities. There's a big sort facility not far from where I live on the North Side of Pittsburgh. So far, no stories in the local media about changes there.
Also, there's a reason gov't agencies are referred to as a bureaucracy. Changes do not move quickly regardless of who's in charge. It makes me think some of the letter sorting machines may have already been planned to be moved or changed out to make way for package sorting before DeJoy even got there. Mail has been declining for awhile. It makes sense to me that planning would've been underway to adapt to less mail/more packages for awhile, too. This is something that House Dems should be able to find out via USPS budget documents.
Anyway, good job to put a bug in your mailman's ear about voting and especially voting in his own interest.
