Spectacular race. The pacemakers dropped out early. Once they were gone Cheptegei actually accelerated at higher race and kept going, clicking off one 60 second lap after another, then dropping below 60 the final 2 laps.

I'm not sure non-track fans realize the difficulty in those conditions. The vast, vast majority of distance records of that type are in 60ish temperature or below.

Great meet overall. They limited to maybe 5000 fans. I was very impressed with Faith Kipyegon in the women's 1000m. She looked totally fit and healthy, nearly breaking the world record in that seldom-raced distance. Last year she was coming off maternity leave and not in peak condition.

Only big disappointment was Sifan Hassan in the 5000. She was the best runner in the world last year but never looked right today. Her face was strained throughout. Then she stepped off the track with 3 laps remaining.

My best time in the 880yd in high school was 2:02, and I thought I was flying. I can't imagine running over 3 miles at that pace.

I watched the race live on Olympic Channel this afternoon. But Tim Hutchings on the British commentary is so far superior. I wish NBC would have found a way to keep him. They let him get away a few years ago.
