American Passports Are Useless Now
But in this Year of the Pandemic, that promise rings hollow. My German passport, which I was able to retain when I naturalized, currently entitles me to travel almost anywhere in the world. My American passport can gain me access to only a handful of countriesnot including Germany or the majority of developed democracies in Asia, Europe, Australia, or South America. The coronavirus is so out of control here that other nations (understandably) fear contamination from our citizens.
My assumption about which country would go to greater lengths to repatriate its citizens in a time of crisis appears to have been wrong, as well. Germany would welcome me back with open arms from this COVID-addled land, though I could be asked to self-isolate. But a draft proposal now circulating in the Trump administration indicates that the U.S. may seek to stop its citizens and legal permanent residents from returning to America from abroad if a border agent reasonably believes that the individual either may have been exposed to or is infected with the communicable disease.

(1,568 posts)...both need passports for our planned trip to England next year. (My cousin and I both turn 50 and were visiting her in London to celebrate!) We are getting them this fall and the post office dude said we would be shocked at how fast they will come back. No one is applying right now.

(5,528 posts)We applied for my daughter's renewal and it hasn't come back yet. It has already been longer than it should ordinarily take.
My understanding is that the shut down really slowed processing so they got really behind.
Hoping things improve so you can make your trip. London is my favorite place in the whole world. I spent a year there in college and try to back when I can. If you are a Shakespeare fan (as indicated by your avatar), you should catch a show in the Globe. We saw "As You Like It" the last time I was there and thought it was a really cool experience.

(32,017 posts)We are a SICK nation, in more than one sense, but COVID-19 sealed the deal. I cant blame other nations for shunning us at this time. No telling how long it will be before our public health disaster abates and we are allowed to rejoin the civilized world.
