(14,565 posts)Serene trails and picnic areas. Covered bridges. Campgrounds.
I really enjoy every visit, especially walking to the top of the mountain.
I remember as a young kid it was fascinating to see the carvings. We had never seen anything like that, and were too young to understand the historical significance. My dad explained it to me a few years later, along with emphasizing that the topic was certain to resurface, even if not high profile at the time.

(5,557 posts)And I also suspect the parties on site what would be doing any enforcement (arrests, ticketing, anything) probably are sympathetic to the goons. Law enforcement isn't on our side nine times out of ten - especially in the rural south!

(1,725 posts)I couldn't stop. It was scary as hell because both sides had assault rifles. It took a long time for the fights to start - there were actually men on the racist side who were talking calmly without calling names or trying to escalate. Those listening to them were also trying to keep the peace. These weren't "Antifa" per say, but BLM who heard what was happening and came to counter protest.
There was ugliness too, make no mistake. Heard the N word multiple times. I was terrified shooting would start, but... my impression of those racist gunslingers was those rifles were for show. No balling aggressors over there, they were more cowardly than they looked and sounded. THANK GOD, cuz it could've been a horrible tragedy. BLMers got right in there faces and wouldn't move. Racists underestimated how fearless the BLMers were, & I mean, they were FEARLESS. They kept snatching confederate flags away from them and burning them on the street, and they let them. Didn't stop 'em. Floored me, but thank goodness.
I'm watching the last hour of it now.

(1,725 posts)It lasted FIVE hours. Some fights, lots of screaming, arguing, but thank goodness, no one hurt or worse, shot. In fact, some of those on opposite sides talked for a long time without violence. Cops took 5 hours to show up, dispersed everybody without strong force, nor even aggression. So maybe it was a good day.
