For more than a decade, Republican congressional leaders awkwardly attempted to distance themselves from Steve King, the nine-term congressman from Iowa who associated himself with several high-profile white nationalists, seemingly compared Mexican immigrants to dirt, and insinuated that non-Western civilizations havent made any significant contributions to society. After years of condemnations and sidestepping, the GOP finally cut bait in 2020, funneling hundreds of thousands of dollars to Kings primary challenger, Randy Feenstra, who unseated the 18-year incumbent on June 2. The party breathed a collective sigh of relief.
Seventy days later, the GOP nominated someone who, according to one top House Republican aide, is ten times worse than Kingat a minimum.
Marjorie Taylor Greeneowner of a construction company in Alpharetta, Georgiadefeated Dr. John Cowan in the Republican primary runoff for Georgias 14th Congressional District on Tuesday, 57 percent to 43 percent. And in a district Donald Trump won by 53 points in 2016, Greene is well on her way to Congress.
As was the case with King, Republican elected officials will find themselves answering for Greene with regularity. She ascribes to the QAnon conspiracy theory the FBI classifies as a domestic terrorist threat, saying in a video that Q is a patriot who is worth listening to. She referred to the 2018 midterm elections as an Islamic invasion of our government, and has repeatedly downplayed the existence of racism and played up white identity politics. Guess what? Slavery is over, she said in one video. The most mistreated group of people in the United States today are white males.

(1,670 posts)In Washington we had Loren Culp running for Governor in the primary. My wife was saying "he can't win." But I looked at it and said, "this guy has the most despicable positions, and they'll be able to 'own the libs' if they choose him. Naturally he's the GOP candidate for Governor. To a very great extent Amanda Marcote is right, this isn't about good governance, public policy, balancing the budget or any other sane position you could propose, it's what will drive liberals up the wall because it's so mind numbingly stupid.
Now they've got Qannon, which by it's very nature drives liberals nuts, because as with pretty much all conspiracy theories, you can pick it apart in about 5 seconds just on the sheer improbability of being able to conceal it. She's the modern GOPs ideal candidate.
That running a country is probably not possible if your only goal is to piss of people who disagree with you probably doesn't even cross their minds. They'll assume that the secret liberal pedophile ring is stealing their SS checks from their mailboxes using the key's they duplicated during the Obama administration.
If it could be kept on a TV show it would have good ratings, it's one of those tragic comedies. The only drama comes when you look away from the screen.

(15,286 posts)I'd have a field day with this CT looney tune. Every time I saw her, I'd stop talking to whoever I was with, then I and my conservation partner would turn and just smile at her. Can you imagine how quickly her nutty brain would conjer up a conspiracy? It would be hilarious.

The ones that prefer to cloak their racism in code words and dog whistles are at odds with the ones that wear their bigotry and hate proudly.
Republicans aren't bothered by hate. They all agree on who they hate. They only disagree on how they express that hate.
