(Daily Mail) Donald Trump is losing ground among typically Republican-voting Mormons in Arizona, as some members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints take a surprising turn and put their support behind Democratic candidate Joe Biden. Yasser Sanchez, who twice worked to defeat Biden's bids for vice presidency by building support for Republican candidates among fellow Mormons, now says he'll vote for Biden in the upcoming election. Sanchez finds himself in a surprising position as he's become repelled from his party and by President Donald Trump. 'We're taught to be steady, to be basically the opposite of the way he's lived his life,' Sanchez said.
On Wednesday more than 200 people identifying themselves as Republicans who belong to the church published an open letter declaring their opposition to Trump and calling him 'the antithesis of so much the Latter-day Saints community believes.
In a bid to recapture votes, the Trump campaign launched its Latter-day Saints for Trump Coalition this past week and sent Vice President Mike Pence to Mesa, a suburb of Phoenix, for the kickoff on Tuesday. While many conservative-leaning religious voters warmed to him long ago, Trump has struggled to win over Latter-day Saints.
His penchant for foul language clashes with the church's culture teaching modesty and self-restraint, and his isolationist foreign policy is anathema to a faith spreading rapidly around the world. Trump's fued with Sen. Mitt Romney, a Republican from Utah and one of the best known members of the church, has further tarnished his reputation among believers.
Trump's relative weakness with Latter-day Saints is now a growing political liability. (Read More)

(7,423 posts)Mormonism is being tested. I have to say Romney and the gang are showing some backbone. Good on them.
I can't say the same for Southern Baptists Ted Cruz and Lindsey Graham.
The Catholic church will never recover from its failed tests in the form of the sex abuse scandals.
CV-19 also tested the NRA and its core tenant against tyranny this year. They failed.

(10,575 posts)Outside of Utah growth has all but disappeared. In the last year alone the current Leadership has under the prophetic roll:
- Shortened church from three hours to two
- Done away with the requirement to wear white shirts if male
- Done away with the requirement for dresses for women missionaries
- Changed the temple ceremony twice (removing parts that were taught as eternal ordinances)
- Admitted the Book of Mormon is not literal
- Admitted their history is not what they have been teaching
- Admitted Joseph Smith translated the Book of Mormon via placing his head in a hat and looking at at a rock
- Admitted the Book of Abraham does not match the scrolls it was supposedly translated from
- tried to equate calling members Mormons to something insulting and I sting the term not be used.
And thats just a partial list. The LDS church wont even resemble what it was in a few years.

(7,447 posts)name a religion that doesn't have some "whacko" beliefs?
I am not anti-religion. It provides guidance, hope, and comfort to billions, so on that alone I find it worthwhile, but from wine turning into the blood of Christ to a host of other beliefs, religions don't ten to stick to the rational in their belief systems 100 percent.

(3,256 posts)Like every other "culture" there are a lot of different views and a lot of it has to do with economic class. In business anything goes but that seems to be true for most religions. Somehow people can rationalize any behavior when money is involved. By and large I have found most Mormons that I know to be very down to earth and practical people. Salt Lake is actually a very progressive city. Mesa not so much.

(6,196 posts)Evil leaders almost always look to religion to provide legitimacy, and there will always be plenty of religious people willing to give them that cover.
Hitler relied on the Catholic bishops of Germany to support him in his rise to power, just like the Evangelicals are doing with Trump.
Not to mention White Supremacists and KKK who claim to be religious.
They support Trump to achieve their secular goals, not spiritual ones.
They have no love in their hearts, that's obvious.

Hell, they would switch to Biden by the millions if he promised to appoint a Pro-Life Supreme Court justice. The economy, national security, all of our Global alliances, even democracy itself are expendable in their minds to end abortion.

They helped, IN A BIG WAY, delivering the state of Arizona to the imbecile intent on turning America into a fascist dictatorship.
I LONG AGO told the Mormons knocking on my door every week to go you know what. They, like asshole Joe Scarborough, are part of the problem, not part of the solution.
I'd be SHOCKED if the Mormon vote DID NOT go for Benedict Doturd again this year.

They think he's doing a great job pushing back against the 'loony left' and they feel he's great on the religious freedom issue. It's sad.
