the Democrat party. Mark fucking racist POS Meadows did it this morning, and Democrats and news personalities need to call them out on this
The traitorous, racist party that has become the Republican Party, need to be called out on this whenever they use it
THEY DO NOT GET TO DEFINE US

(115,806 posts)It's their charming way of emphasizing the word "rats." That's why they do it. We have our own words for them here on DU, but at least our spokespeople and elected officials have enough class not to use them in public.

(6,279 posts)and when I lived in rural Indiana there were some Democrats who would say it as well; they'd heard it enough that it sounded correct to them!

(28,349 posts)Their Tweet was pro Biden which told me this person didn't know any better. They've heard it so much, they thought it was correct. I just politely let them know the usage was a right wing slur.
Hopefully they saw it, as well as others who may not know or were unsure.
A couple of years ago, I corrected a Lawrence O'Donnell tweet. The next night he smiled as he said it correctly. I knew that smile was for my Tweet. I smiled back from my living room, lol.

(7,911 posts)instead of saying something "He's a Jewish banker" they say "He's a Jew banker." It's a blatantly prejudicial use of language, and it annoys the living hell out of me.

The Republicans are doing it deliberately to yank our chains becuase they know it gets a reaction - and, frankly - making a big deal of it is not worth the potential insult to rural/less educated Democrats who do the same thing.

This is not a battle worth fighting - and if you choose to fight it you're attacking Democrats as well.

(18,486 posts)This isn't about mispronunciation by people, but the Republicans' intentional and long-standing effort to mock and ridicule Democrats by purposely calling us out of our names. Two different things.
But this isn't the first time the propensity to step in and defend/explain/justify Republican behavior has been noted.
Ms. Toad
(34,085 posts)I'm not defending Republicans - I'm criticizing Democrats who are acting in an elitist condescending manner toward speech that is common among rural and/or less educated Democrats.
Just as you can't use gay as an insult without slamming those of us who are gay, you can't slam people for using a phrase that is pretty common in certain Democratic communities without slamming the Democrats in those communities.
StarfishSaver
(18,486 posts)If I criticize a man for calling a woman a "bitch," I am not "inherently calling out anyone" who has difficulty speaking English and pronounces "beach" as "bitch."
Republicans who use the term "Democrat" as an adjective aren't having difficulty with speech. They are using the term as an intentional insult.
As I said, two different things.
Ms. Toad
(34,085 posts)Or when you call Trump or Pence gay, you're not insulting other gay people
It doesn't work that way. When you ridicule someone for using an incorrect phrase, everyone who uses that phrase and hears your ridiculs feels the impact of your words.

Is it really that important that they get an adjective wrong? Does it somehow impair your ability to understand them? I'm as picky as they come in an academic setting, but I don't apply those standards to real life. If what they are trying to communicate is understandable, outside of academia that's all that matters.

(11,636 posts)...from people whose intent was to redefine the Democratic Party in a negative light. I live in the rural Midwest and I have never heard this term uttered by a Democrat or almost anyone with sincerity... only by Republicans as an aspersion or occasionally by people pretending to be Democrats to subvert the conversation. Occasionally someone will show up here in DU and using that word as an adjective is like a bright neon sign signifying an impostor. Calling it what it is does not offend the 'poor ignorant Democrats in the country who don't talk proper English'... If anything here is "elitist" then its that argument.

(34,085 posts)I grew up in rural Nebraska and a fair number of them say Democrat party rather than Democratic. They aren't fancy people. Many of the ones I'm thinking of didn't complete high school, and most didn't go to college. I am speaking from experience - and not experience after the Republicans latched onto the fact that thye could yank our chains.

It's an indication of how useless the modern media is, failing to correct a subtle yet obvious dig at the Democratic Party. They've enabled this, make no mistake.
