Would you like a Star Membership, but funds are kinda tight?
During the DU Summer Fund Drive, if someone gives $35 to DU, they can give a Star Membership TO YOU!
Yup, this is possible.
We have so many people who are struggling financially.
I can only do this once, but maybe others can do it too.

I just did it. It's pretty easy. You make your $35 donation and you get two DU mails. One for your stickies and one for your "double bonus". In the reply to the double-bonus DU mail, you name the person who you want to give the Star Membership to. It probably takes a day to process.
Think about what a wonderful gift it is, to give someone the benefit of DU with no ads!

(625 posts)I have no idea how you sign up for star membership. Can you explain exactly where on this website you can do that? Thanks.

(6,148 posts)The yellow star by your name indicates that you have made a donation to DU. That's a star membership. With a star membership, there are no ads, and you can do advanced searches.
I've been a star member for so long, I forget that there are ads, unless I'm not signed in for some reason and they pop up.
There have been a few people who are not star members who have had some other problems with viewing. I think it has to do with the ads.

(28,820 posts)Can access more of DU. Mostly its a way to support DU.
One of my favorites is buying hearts for people on Valentines Day. Basically a fund raiser. But humbling and fun to find someone has anonymously given you a heart.
You can be a star member for as little as $1 for a year.

(12,392 posts)there are people on this site who are here to cause dissension and trouble. Sometimes it is easy to distinguish them for the fact that they dont choose to become members or donate to DU. If it was costly to get a star it would be different,But its only a matter of one dollar. I dont want to donate money to someone who is purposely trying to divide us.

(6,148 posts)I'd say that anyone with over 1000 responses is a good candidate.
Within the last two months, there have been two people who have said that they can't afford a Star Membership. My heart aches when I hear that.
But if you are curious, you can always check out their posts with Advanced Search.

(12,392 posts)You are not as suspicious as I can often be. Blame the Scorpio in me. As overly generous as I have been accused of being, I also tend to be cautious of sheep that smell of wolf.

(6,148 posts)I gave mine to someone with 10,000 stars. I've been a member of DU for over 12 years and I don't have 5000 stars. So, if you have 10,000 stars, you're pretty committed.

(6,148 posts)A better term?
I'll change it.
Keep in mind, if you can't afford to give $1/yr to DU, you are definitely pinching pennies.

(6,148 posts)If you need/want a Star Membership.
I can only afford to do it once.
I'm sure you're sick of the ads.
