Just in case there is anyone on DU stupid enough to do so.
I am a Floridian. We do some dumb stuff. But we all know two basic facts: 1. Dont go swimming with gators. 2. Dont eat the Oleander.

(149,640 posts)It used to be widely planted on school playgrounds, until its poisonous effects became known. Then they all vanished.
We still plant them next to, or between freeways. They are hardy with beautiful flowers and don't need much care.

(12,392 posts)Yes, we also dont see as much Oleander as in the old days. No shortage of other pretty flowering plants, not quite so deadly.

(6,148 posts)It will be terrible if the two are confused, but they probably will be.
Oleandrin is being studied as possibly beneficial, but the results to date have been inconclusive. But it is not toxic.

(50,560 posts)It is what makes oleander poisonous. It is used as a drug in small doses (remember, The Dose Makes The Poison), but an overdose will be fatal - and "overdose" kicks in very early on the scale.

(90,714 posts)But not for me, ever. Its unsafe for children, grandchildren, and pets. Back in the day, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts were taught to never use sticks of oleander or indeed of any unknown plant for campfires or hot dogs or marshmallows because, you know, DEATH.
How did we get to be this stupid? What next? A few drops of Deadly Nightshade?

(24,303 posts)I mean they will eat a rose bush, thorns and all. But they will not touch Oleander.
crickets
(25,981 posts)They came back for more the second night and ate them down to tiny nubs. If they'll eat those but not touch oleander, that tells you something.

This is all just so surreal. It is like one long, endless episode of the Twilight zone. I am certain that if we have to put up with him for another four years, I will end up in a mental hospital.
