Visiting friends in Berks Co. PA. Sitting on their deck and I see one of these things every 30 seconds or so. Been whacking them with my flip-flops. Got to get above and a bit IN FRONT of them in order to not miss. They are fast but it seems that they can't jump backwards or sideways.

(14,764 posts)People talk about them being so thick on trees you feel like its raining standing underneath them. It's scat of course....
They suck the juices out of emerging growth, eventually killing whatever plant or tree they engorge on. They have no known predators, so when they move in, they move in by the millions.
You must just be on the edge of their range.
There is a wasp that will eat them and keep them in check, but would we be trading one invasive pest for another?

(8,854 posts)...is pretty rural. Lots of trees and some woods by my friends' property. But I also see them quite a bit in the city.

Original airdate: 9/24/2019 | We stomp them, and spray them, but a Montgomery County teen might have a better plan for getting rid of those nasty spotted lanternflies.
Rachel Bergey, 14, started caring because they were hogging up the tree she likes to climb.
Then she found out she might not ever be able to climb her tree anymore if the spotted lanternfly did it what it does and kills trees.
So she got to work. When the bugs start crawling up the tree they hit the foil ring. They die about 24 hours later. She killed 1,200 of them in two weeks with just two traps.
Bergey is headed to Washington D.C. next month. She's one of 30 middle schoolers competing in a national science competition.

(10,014 posts)Never heard of them because they havent reached Iowa as they move west.
We tracked Japanese Beetles and Emerald Ash Bore as they moved west and decimated our plants and trees but these Spotted Lanternflies sound super annoying.

(8,854 posts)If you ever have occasion to look one in the face they have bright red eyes (or two red spots on either side of their face that look like eyes). I swear to God they look sinister as hell.
