General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsHow on earth can Democrats win this election?
Democrats are constrained by law for everything they do.
Trump has no legal or moral constraints and can do just about anything he wants without fear of swift retribution.
Our main hope is a massive voter turnout against Trump but even if that happens will it be enough?
We know of the Post Office crimes being committed but you can be sure that is only the tip of the iceberg.
Trump certainly has multiple schemes to rig the election, most we don't know of yet.
The Democrat's only recourse is the ploddingly slow legal system which can do nothing before the election, (And is rigged by Barr anyway.)
This is the scariest election I've every experienced and I fear that Trump has the upper hand and will be able to hold on to power no matter how the public actually votes.
We are on the knife's edge of falling into a totalitarian society and there is no easy way to prevent it.

Sorry about the rant but this seems much more dangerous to me than the media is portraying it.

(8,054 posts)HACKED the voting machines. Are they going to hack the down-ballot races? Are they still hackable there? I'm not in the Senate or in Intelligence, so I have no idea. But, #1, I don't trust the russians, and #2, I don't trust the security of the voting machines.

(94,602 posts)There is NO evidence that votes were flipped.
Hillary Clinton didn't say it happened.
The DNC Chair (from Florida) didn't say it happened.

(29,322 posts)It is true they were hacked though.
Tallahassee Democrat political reporter Jeffrey Schweers describes how the state of Florida's elections were hacked in 2016.
TORI LYNN SCHNEIDER AND TIM WALTERS, FLORIDA TODAY
What we know about the 2016 Russian hacking of Florida's election system comes from several sources: Special Counsel Robert Mueller's 2019 report and indictments related to his investigation, leaked National Security Agency documents and thick, heavily redacted reports submitted to the House and Senate intelligence committees.
Heres what they reveal:
Months before the November 2016 general election, inter-connected election-related networks in 21 states were potentially targeted by Russian government cyber actors.
In Florida, Russian cyber actors connected to the G.R.U., the Russian military's foreign intelligence service, sent a spear-phishing email to 120 email accounts containing Trojan horses. One of them was spotted by Volusia County Elections Supervisor Lisa Lewis, who sent out warnings to voters not to open the email.
They also launched a spear-phishing campaign to infiltrate VR Systems, a Tallahassee-based company that makes the software used by several states and now all 67 Florida counties to manage voter registration data and electronic poll books.

I don't trust that they did all this hacking for fun and who knows what tricks they have up their sleeves.

(94,602 posts)They said there were intrusions into the voter file. That MIGHT allow the Russians to delete or invalidate voter registrations but there were also no significant complaints that voters were unable to vote on Election Day.
Russian hackers breached the systems of two county elections systems in Florida in 2016, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said Tuesday at a news conference. DeSantis said no data were tampered with and vote tallies were not affected.
The intrusions, which had not ever been publicly confirmed, were first disclosed in special counsel Robert Mueller's report about Russian interference in the 2016 election last month.
"I recently met with the FBI concerning the election issue mentioned in the Mueller report," DeSantis said. "Two Florida counties experienced intrusion into the supervisor of election networks. There was no manipulation."
DeSantis said he could not disclose which counties' networks were compromised, but he said the voter data that the attackers gained access to was already public.

(7,447 posts)this is why we lose.
We fear while the other side is fearless.
Our "recourse" is to stop being fucking afraid and getting out there and voting and getting others to vote.
That's it. That's all you need. Get to it.

(18,634 posts)If you fear something you will work extra hard to alleviate that fear.
If you don't fear anything you relax and don't do as much.
That's why Trump is our president. Republicans have been using fear as a primary motivator for decades.
Hillary had a 98% chance of winning so many people thought it wasn't worth their while to get out and vote.
Republicans gin up fake fears but this one is as real as it gets.

(34,857 posts)Sorry but this narrative is extremely dangerous. You're not helping by suggesting that there is no easy way to prevent Trump's essentially stealing this race.
People are not going to risk their lives if they're constantly being told this election is almost unwinnable because of Trump. If you want to dispirit voters, reinforce the idea that voting is basically a lost cause.

(35,443 posts)We win by voting. Simple as that. The only way the Republicans can win is to get us to disengage from the process. Cynicism and despair are their primary weapons.

(2,025 posts)You sound like you are getting into that level of despair. If you're right, that's all the more reason to FIGHT! Because even if they are going to "win" by cheating, still, WE SHOULD MAKE THEM HAVE TO DO IT. Because when they don't even have to do it any more, THAT'S when they've actually won.
I don't think it's that bad yet. You seem to be suggesting we're about 1936 Germany, but I think we're probably more about 1932 Germany. And we also have those lessons of recent history to guide us. So don't give up. Vote, donate, agitate, whatever you can do. We've still got two and a half months ...

(7,814 posts)talk about the challenges we face and ask questions about it. Maybe a DUer will feel the need to write an article about it. Next thing, perhaps the discussion will trickle up to journalists, pundits, elected leaders and at some point things will change. Maybe we are slow to learn how to combat lawlessness, no bar too low, willingess to lie and cheat but if talking about it gets people angry or outraged or concerned or motivated then I'm for it.

(13,603 posts)Democrats far outnumber republicans and have for a long time. The problem is that turnout is far higher on the russian/GOP side. If every democrat actually voted, we would never have another republican president. Many more senate seats would be won too. The House has its gerrymandering problem which could be rectified.

(543 posts)I'm 85 and I guess the retirement home can bus us to the polls. But, at 85, it's frightening to go into a crowded place, even if they let me go to the head of the line. My sister in East Cobb County (Newt was her congressman and lived just a few miles away) has already called Cobb County for a ballot and got it. This was before the post office s l o w d o w n. I've got to call DeKalb County and hope for the best. With Kenp for our governor, I don't count on any best. Triple sigh.

(14,565 posts)That is the only method. Preference among that group is everything. Turnout is incredibly overrated. Turnout level on one side is mirrored by turnout level on the other side. They can move separately in midterms but not in presidential years.
If independents continue to favor our side, we win. If they switch back to Trump like 2016, he wins. So far everything looks good and logical on our side. Just don't believe any report of a landslide win. There is 0% chance Biden will receive anything close to 60%, despite some threads here. I would sign up for 52% and be thrilled.
