UNC-Chapel Hill reverses plans for in-person classes after 130 students test positive for Covid-19

(CNN)The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill abruptly decided it will no longer hold in-person classes on campus after about 130 students tested positive for Covid-19 in the first week since classes began.

In the past week, the Covid-19 positivity rate among students rose to 13.6% of the 954 students tested, and five employees also tested positive, according to the university's Covid-19 dashboard. As of Monday morning, 177 students were in isolation and 349 were in quarantine, both on and off campus.

Most students with Covid-19 have demonstrated mild symptoms, Chancellor Kevin M. Guskiewicz and Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Robert A. Blouin said in a letter to the community.
Effective Wednesday, all undergraduate in-person instruction will shift to remote learning, they write. The university also expects the majority of undergraduate residential students to change their residential plans for the fall.

Florida...erm, I mean Covid-19

MARTIN COUNTY — Ninety South Fork High School students and six teachers will have to quarantine after a student exhibited COVID-19 symptoms, district officials confirmed Sunday.

One-hundred and thirty-six students have been forced to quarantine since schools reopened Tuesday. The Department of Health Sunday informed district officials that students would have to quarantine for the 14-day period, district spokesperson Jennifer DeShazo said. She could not confirm when the student first became ill.

Teachers, deemed essential workers by the district, are to report to work as long as they are not experiencing symptoms. The teachers will live stream lessons from their classrooms to the students who transitioned to remote learning; students from the other classes will stream the lessons from the library or gym, DeShazo said.

“There will be no students going to the classroom with any of the six teachers” who were exposed, she said.
