Trump threatens to send federal troops into New York if violence continues

President Trump redoubled his threats to send federal agents into New York City in response to a recent spike in gun violence that has left seven
dead and more than 50 others shot since Friday.

“Law and Order,” Trump tweeted at New York Mayor Bill de Blasio, reacting to the news of the shootings in his hometown on Sunday. “If [he] can’t do it, we will!”

The president’s tweet comes as New Yorkers are emerging from a months-long shutdown due to the pandemic into a barrage of gun violence that has surged in all five boroughs in recent months. According to police, 51 people were shot between Friday and Sunday, the AP reported. There was a 177 percent increase in the number of shooting incidents across the city last month, police records show.

Trump, who is seeking reelection on a tough-on-crime stance, has used the upticks in violence in Democratic-led cities like New York to justify his claims that Democrats pushing for police reform and budget cuts have allowed criminal activity to continue unabated. His campaign has been airing television commercials that suggest no one will answer emergency 911 calls if his presumed Democratic rival, former vice president Joe Biden, is elected, the AP reported.

6. Better than you might think

A lot of people are afraid of NYC going back to the bad old days of the 1970's and 1980's. The lockdowns have been devastating for the city's economy, and this crime wave on top of it could be the death knell as people decide whether or not to come back or move away permanently. The uptick in violence in cities plays right into Trump's hands, and Democratic mayors need to do more to get it under control. I have no doubt some of the violence is being perpetrated by Trump supporters posing as BLM, but at the end of the day that doesn't matter politically, as few will believe that. People want to feel safe, especially in a city that's already lost so much.
