(5,477 posts)The Microsoft Z80 Softcard - it added a Z80 processor board so you could run CP/M and all of the software that ran under that operating system.
It sold for somewhere between $300-400 - way too rich for my blood at the time! I bought a pirated bare clone board and populated it with the components for maybe $75. Worked fine, but did run a tad hot - I had to add an extra fan to my old Apple II+ to keep it from overheating.

If it is a really rough update I might be beamed to another dimension.

(5,477 posts)The place was in Brighton Beach (a.k.a. 'Little Odessa') right by Coney Island, called "The National". If you ever saw the Robin Williams move, "Moscow on the Hudson" you saw it - when Williams got a job as a busboy this is where it was filmed).
Interesting place. I was stopped at the door when I arrived with 2 Black women from our office, and the guy at the door was adamant that there was no (name of co-worker from Kiev that set these up) reservation. Co-worker heard the commotion and came out, said a few things in Russian to the guy, and we were let in. When one woman's husband showed up a little later to join us there was another loud scuffle at the door, and host guy made another trip to get him in. They were obviously and very overtly unhappy with having Black people there.
We'd always go on a Friday night, for reasons that became very clear to all participants as the evening progressed. We probably had 20-25 people most of the times, and we'd be seated at a LONG table, which was completely covered with plates of food...smoked meats, cheeses, veggies, etc. Oh, yeah - we also had one bottle of Stoli vodka for every 5 people (you could order more, as needed, and we usually wound up with at least one or two more) with a water glass to drink from. There were small plates to eat off of - one at each place and slightly hanging off the edge of the table, because it was so full of all the rest of the food.
When we finished that food, they cleared the table and brought out a second round of different goodies - duck, caviar, more cheeses, and a lot of other interesting little specialties. As we finished that and were thanking the host for the great meal he had ordered for us...they brought out the main course! Usually Chicken Kiev, and shish kabobs. Followed by desserts, coffee, and more Stoli. Lots of loud music, dancing, and interesting people watching going on while we ate, and after. It seems like this was 'THE' place to be seen, where the newer immigrants would show up to show off how well they'd 'made it'. Lots of jewelry, fancy gowns, furs, etc. We always made an enjoyable evening of it.
When you were leaving the place there was a telephone just inside the front door, mounted on the doorframe. If you picked it up you were automatically connected to a taxi company to get your very drunk ass home safely, instead of chancing passing out on the subway and getting robbed.
After recovering over the weekend, when we got back to work on Monday people would usually tell you if you had a good time.
Fun times!

What a great time in your life. That is a movie all by itself.
They were generous with tables of food, drink & saw that everyone got safely home.
Wow.
I want to hear more...🙂

Fun times, indeed!
Lots of food and plenty of Stoli. I'm trying to imagine what your final tab was like. Do you remember?
It's nice to have such awesome memories.
