SOUTHAVEN, Mississippi Mississippi is closing 13 food centers across the state that serve low-income mothers and children.
Officials are planning to start a new program next year where participants use electronic cards to access supplies at grocery stores and pharmacies instead.
The transition will begin in January at the earliest. Officials say the eWIC card system will be easier to use and more convenient.
So they are closing food centers 9/30 and opening new ones in January? Happy holidays from the repukes to single moms & kids?

Due to the transition to a retail food system via an electronic benefit transfer (EBT) card, the Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) is preparing to close 13 food centers. These food centers have low participant usage, or the landlord has chosen not to continue the lease.

And centers close 09/30, with new system in place the earliest in January.
What are they supposed to eat?

The people who run that program in each state are highly committed. Even after these closures, there will be roughly 65 dedicated centers around the state. These are separate from hundreds of food banks.
I believe the new system where benefits can be used at local stores will be much better, assuming proper funding.
But, yeah, Im concerned. 40+ years ago I used to prepare financial funding reports for WIC, Medicaid, and other similar programs in another state. Best job I ever had for satisfaction, but the politics absolutely sucked.
