For one, they are not silent. They are the most obnoxious, in your face, wearing their MAGA hats, always spouting their opinions people there are. Second, they arent the majority of Americans, but are the hateful, racist 35%.

but it is an example that we can essentially send the Republican Party into extinction-its a very real possibility if they didn't have the 18th Century relic of the Electoral College

(16,646 posts)It has been estimate that in the American revolution, the population was about 20% Loyalists, 20% wanted independence, and 60% really held no opinion. That 60% is roughly the only real silent majority. I suspect in many ways it is true about the current situation.
There are the 20 - 30% on each side that pay attention, and there is a large portion of the population that pays little attention at all. Some occasionally wake up and vote for many reasons, but many do not. Unfortunately, I'm afraid that these people ultimately also decide many of our close elections. These low information voters are what drive candidates in close elections "towards the middle". It is why negative advertising works. It is why campaigns tend to advertise personality more, and positions less. Basically they have 30 seconds or so to affect these voters.
So we see ads about abortion, guns, god, medicare, and social security. But even more so we see ads about even more vague things like freedom, shining cities, leadership, change, hope, "taking back", and "MAGA".

As for the so-called silent majority referred to in the OP, I would not think it applied to MAGA hat wearers, but might be more properly used to describe people who won't talk about it, but will vote for Trump this fall. Fox News is scaring the shit out of them.
