'It scared me': Maddow unnerved by Obama warning about potential 'end of American democracy'

https://www.rawstory.com/2020/08/it-scared-me-maddow-unnerved-by-obama-warning-about-potential-end-of-american-democracy/

MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow confessed that there were parts of President Barack Obama’s speech that genuinely “scared her.”

“President Obama’s speech tonight slayed me,” said Maddow. “I’m sure people will have different opinions about it because it’s a different kind of thing. His warnings that we could potentially be at the end of American democracy scared me, and I found upsetting and hard to watch. But it’s powerful. Powerful stuff.”

Co-host Joy Reid explained that Obama would know the facts because he not only has been in the Oval Office for eight years, but he also sat in that office with President Donald Trump when his staff was trying to get a secret line to call Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“So President Obama can be a poet,” said Reid. “There’s a kind of speech he gives — particularly his eulogies — that are all poetry and take you through these emotional chords of American history. He’s a writer, so he speaks as a writer and participates in writing his speech, which is unusual for a politician. And he has this poetic and almost dramatic sort of sense. That was not the kind of speech he gave tonight. This was President Obama saying, ‘I sat in that office and I want you to listen to me because I’m warning you because I know it from inside the job that there’s a danger here.’ This was the speech that Obama has given throughout all of the speeches I’ve read or watched that absolutely did feel like the most of a warning. And I think it was warning about the potential end of America.”

And this isn’t hyperbole. It’s what I truly believe. Our democracy is already more damaged than most people realize.

I wish the DNC would have brought in a Jewish Holocaust survivor or even a German who lived during the rise of Nazism, and draw the parallels to then and now; really lay it all out for some, whom seem to think they can still fuck around "on principle".

He was struggling with the need to give the speech and his always present sense of decorum. Calling an incompetent, ignorant, bully, traitor and wanna be dictator out who is occupying the Office of President of the United States was something he hoped he would never have to do. I think it was painful for him to give that speech

And he is right. We have to drag our friends and family across the finish line. This is no normal election. None of us of ever seen anything like it before

The US Constitution will be meaningless from the Bill of Rights on down.

Congress will be disbanded. It will only consist of those LOYAL to the Ruler.

The Courts will be ordered by fiat to rule in favor of the Ruler.

All Civil, Human, Constitutional rights thrown out.

Political enemies will be arrested and imprisoned without trial.

Protesters will be shot or imprisoned without trial.

The Press will be shut down.

The Military will be ordered to wage war on the people.

Sounds like something out of a dystopian styled Novel or movie. It could happen if we do not band together and sit out this election. Obama's warning was very clear about that.

Not sure why that warning should have been the shocking moment that democracy could end due to the orange fascism.

Yes, Obama was absolutely warning about the possible end of America. He was terrified about that, you could see it.

Yes, Obama is privy to info that the rest of us aren't as a former President. Yes, it is the first time in our lifetimes that a former President has sounded the alarm about a current President so openly. Kudos to Obama for rising to the occasion.

BUT...it's not like the rest of us can't see enough on our own to KNOW that this is true already.

I feel like - there are things that a lot of people know, that talk show hosts are unwilling to say unless someone with power and position says them first. And the talk show hosts are always months behind. And we can't afford that.

2016 before Trump won. He’s always known. I will never forget when Obama had a photo op with Trump in the WH after he’d won, Obama had the saddest damn expression on his face, like he was near crying. It makes me tear up just thinking about it.

It was scary for me too. Obama is the wisest leader we have, he's not one to throw around these terms lightly. Our Democracy is over if Trump steal the election, there will be no way back from it, we'll be a single party rule indefinitely where our liberties are taken one by one.
