It is hell living in Trumplandia...SW PA

Last edited Fri Aug 21, 2020, 09:48 PM - Edit history (1)

We have only seen our friends a few times social distancing outside. This evening we were sitting on a friend's porch and they have a Biden sign in their yard. A car stopped in front of the house blowing its horn, calling us f@#king assholes and yelling go to f@#king hell.
We have had our home damaged because of political signs. So we can no longer put signs out. This whole area is filled with trump flags and signs. More than 2016. They do not put out 1 sign, they put out 5 or 6 or more and flags they all have those ugly flags flying. It is truly a sickness. Be thankful if you live in an area that is not filled with nasty trump worshipers.

Biden sign within a few feet of the roadway, secured on each side by a 5 foot length of #6 rebar, pounded 3 feet into the ground.

Trumper goes to squish it and messes up their vehicle.

Add a trail cam 50 feet up the road to record the entertainment and get the plates for both documentation and perhaps filing a criminal complaint.

Full disclosure, not an original idea. One of my wife's cousins already did this with a Trump sign, but is using some oak branches instead of rebar

Moved to Pittsburgh 3 years ago, but I still work in Greensburg. Drive out there every day with my Trump Sucks bumper sticker. ThereS a big scratch about 8 inches below the sticker where someone keyed my car. The sickest thing about that is that it happened in the parking lot of Westmoreland hospital. Even in a hospital you’re not safe from these evil people!

So far there are no signs on the street where I live now, but one house has a Trump flag. We got a notice from our insurance company that there’s a convicted sex offender on our street. Yep. Same house.

I used to place it on my couch, but then the Tea Party and the Trump-kooks adopted the different, but similar, rattlesnake flag with the yellow background.

So I eventually hid the pillow in a closet, concerned that some guest might assume I was associated with those jerks. Lol.

I think John Proctor lost his land in Westmoreland County because he'd never officially secured a deed for it! So another guy came along later who did, for that same land, and Proctor thereafter left for Mason/Fleming County KY. Shocking, considering that Proctor was literate and an early sheriff there! How did he forget a deed?! (Edit: It could also be viewed as Karma, though, because he had previously seized the properties of people that remained loyal to King George, which was given to the rebels of Britain. The Revolutionary War was really more like a Civil War.)

Probably my most interesting ancestor, as far as offering an "entertaining" story, was a British loyalist from that same period. (One of two loyalists that I found, all of the others being "patriots".)

He was already in his 60's when the revolution broke out, but he was incredibly active (mostly in Virginia) trying to weaken the rebel cause. He printed counterfeit rebel money, stole their horses, regularly visited and coordinated with Native American allies from far away, etc. He was caught a few times and placed in "gaols" (how jails were often spelled in those days), but would always break out and escape. The last time he was spotted and caught, the anti-British sheriff and his deputies immediately hanged him from a nearby tree. Several people in the county were outraged that he never received a trial, which would have likely had the same result, but they argued that drastic measures had to be taken for such a "dangerous villain" of the patriot cause.

58. That sheriff probably took matters in his own hands...
Sat Aug 22, 2020, 09:52 AM

... because that ancestor, after breaking free from a "gaol", posted a threat on the sheriff's door that he would be killed if he continued his treason against the King.

When my ancestor was later spotted stealing more patriot horses, he was pursued by the sheriff and his deputies on horseback. The ancestor was later tackled from his horse by the sheriff (who had the fastest horse), but he overpowered the sheriff and was in the process of drowning him in a river when the deputies finally caught up.

Then he supposedly confessed to all kinds of Tory activities and boasted that he'd never stop doing them.

So that was the end of him just minutes later.

Here in Springfield I haven't seen too many trump signs or stickers on cars this year. I'm a little surprised because the the county I live in is roughly 60%-40% favoring Republicans. In 2016 there were a lot more of them. During the Bush/Cheney years people literally carpeted their yards with signs. Maybe people here are wising up.

In 2008 the neighbors kids grumbled about my Obama/Biden sign but they left it alone. I still have it.

None of them wear masks if they can get away with it. Everyone says, buy local because of the pandemic. I refuse because it is not safe. I stopped at the local butcher shop figuring I would pay a little more and get local meat that had not been packed in a COVID ridden packing place. No one in the store, not even the butchers, had on masks. I made a U turn and left. I now know how to make burgers with black beans. I was there about 50 minutes. During that time, none of the four employees wore a mask, and only one of the ~40 customers I saw wore one.

The literal day after PA issued its statewide mask requirement, I did a job at a gun shop where the employee (in front of the owner) specifically told customers not to wear masks. The shop was about 10 feet by 15 feet with ten maskless people inside.

A few days ago my job took me through a trailer park where I'd guess two out of three homes had Trump signs.

Ohio is much the same. I recently described it by paraphrasing a classic description of pre-pilgrim America: you could hop from Trump sign to Trump sign from Pennsylvania to Indiana without ever touching the ground.

Towns with average household incomes of $18K absolutely WORSHIP Trump. In a FB argument with someone in my own town, my opponent posted a 500-word screed proving that Trump is on a divine mission as prophesied in scripture.

In short, we'd be lucky if the problem were confined to SW PA.

Incidentally, every last one of my drooling admirers lurking here from their various KKKonservative circle jerk forums can go fuck themselves.

Just this afternoon I got into it with a knucklehead on my community's unofficial FB page, and he had a long list of "proof" that Trump is here to deliver us into the glorious end days.

When I pointed out that Trump is a lying criminal who just today was ordered to pay legal fees to the porn star he fucked and then paid to keep silent so that yet another wife couldn't prove he was cheating on her, the answer was "you forget that you're judging the man."

Well fuck that. I have little tolerance for ad hoc Christianity in the first place, and when those stupid motherfuckers wring out their precious bibles to justify their worship of that incompetent conman?

I’m near in a rural area near York, PA, and it’s Trump Cult Hell here. No confrontations yet, but I wouldn’t even bother with a Biden sign or bumper sticker, as the sign would be gone in a day and my car would be damaged.

There are huge Trump flags, billboards and signs EVERYWHERE. It’s insane. Many homes have Trump flags flying on poles with the U.S. flag. I have even seen cars with those stupid flags on them, like the ones for sports teams. There are “Impeach Wolf” signs and idiotic cheesy billboards that say “Don’t blame me, I voted for Wagner” (Gov. Tom Wolf’s opponent in 2018).

The worst thing is the maskless idiots everywhere. I am high risk with a heart condition, and it’s become a nightmare trying to go anywhere. Barely any businesses enforce the mask rules, let alone social distancing. Even store and restaurant employees go without masks. I couldn’t be happier if these malicious and willfully ignorant idiots infected and killed each other, but I have to fear for my family and myself. I had one maskless guy in a grocery store sarcastically tell me that he saw that my girlfriend and I were following Governor Wolf’s rules by wearing masks. I responded by telling him that I wasn’t wearing the mask for Governor Wolf, but for myself since I’m high risk. He backed down pretty quickly.

I have a tough time trying to share in the optimism from many people on this forum; I realize that my area is a microcosm, but there are many places like this around the state and the country. Without huge turnout from the blue metro areas of PA, it will go Trump again from what I see.

38. I think it depends on what crop the farmers in your area grow.

The soybean farmers around here are leaning Biden. The one that spoke the first night of the convention was from Lawrence County near New Castle. They are on the brink of losing a farm that has been in the family for almost 200 years. He has been a Republican all his life and voted for Trump last election. Not this one.

39. Crops don't seem to matter...

Crops here rotate between corn and soybeans. I’ve seen Trump paraphernalia on farm property, but it’s mostly on a mix of lower income households and quite a few upper middle class homes, plus many small businesses. On some roads that I travel regularly, at least 3 out of 5 houses have Trump signs or flags. I fully expect shrines with Trump statues soon, especially after he loses the election. It’s mind boggling how these people are so duped by a malignant a-hole who wouldn’t even let them in one of his hotels, let alone be friends with them, much less care if they live or die. It’s just a product of the right wing echo chamber and underlying racism. I even have to avoid political discussion with some beloved relatives, who are far to intelligent to fall for Trump’s insanity. But they do, even when they accept that COVID-19 is a real pandemic, they still say that it’s being overblown just to make Dear Leader look bad. I personally know people who think they have had COVID-19 but refuse to report it lest they add to the stats that harm their Dear Leader. This cult is at People’s Temple level insanity.

They are not religious at all. In their 40s, upper middle class, intelligent (obviously not about politics) and good people beyond their inexplicable support of Trump. My BIL is in management at a machine shop, where ownership and coworkers are all gun nuts, racists and Trump cultists. At least he and my sister don’t fly Trump flags or have signs in their yard- my elderly Mom, a progressive Dem, lives right across the street from them and she couldn’t handle that. It’s bad enough that they are always telling her the latest right-wing conspiracy bullcrap, like “the pandemic was engineered by the Dems just to make Trump look bad”. They know better than to bring up any politics with me.

I learned of Hitler at a very young age but could never figure out how a whole country of people (and my dad's family were German) could do the things they did because Hitler told them to. My mom would try to explain but even seeing what is going on now, it is hard to understand how it could come about. It is almost as if they are hypnotised or something. NOTHING he does is wrong. However, I do know a few that have broken free of the spell. I just wish my sister would. It has put a strain on our relationship. The same on a couple of friendships of long duration. You almost have to walk on eggshells when talking to them.

You have a unique perspective that must make the situation now all the more terrifying. I saw fascist ideology creeping into the Republican Party during the Reagan nightmare- I know it was there before, but I was too young to understand. The xenophobia, racism, Nationalism, faux-patriotism and unrestrained corporate power are ten times worse now, with Nazi-style propaganda and projection in full force. Never did I imagine that it could get this bad, especially with such a vile, amoral and disgusting creep like Trump at the helm. It’s astounding how cult-like his supporters are; there is literally no lie too big or no action too heinous that can shake their faith in their “dear leader”. I can say with absolute certainty that if Trump announced that he was opening concentration camps for Dems, liberals, people of color, etc., 90% of his supporters would cheer him on and volunteer to turn in and round up their neighbors. The other 10% would rationalize it as a “necessary evil” to “make America great again”.

About 65% of all white evangelical Christians live in rural or suburban areas. That percentage is even more glaring when you consider the much lower population densities in those areas.

Per the 2010 census, over 80% of the population lives in urban areas! Only about 10% of urbanites identify as evangelical.

Link: https://religionnews.com/2019/07/30/why-do-evangelicals-support-trump-blame-the-suburbs/

According to CNN exit polling, Trump won the white evangelical vote, 80% to 16%, in 2016. And they were 26% of ALL voters. Without them, Clinton won the white-vote too.

live where we do (this was in southern Vermont). People wear masks and distance and the Covid infection rate is very low. On my way home, though, a pickup truck passed me with 3 flags flying: stars and stripes, "Don't Tread On Me," and Trump 2020. Fortunately, that's uncommon in our area.

I'm currently on a farm in Southeast Missouri and the state trooper who lives down the road has a Trump sign next to a Pro Life sign. I scratch my head every time I pass it. Trump and Pro Life.. things that make you go hmmm..

One note - another neighbor down the road removed their Trump flag a few weeks ago. I keep riding my bike pass the house to see if it was back up, but nada. Not sure what it means, but it makes me feel cool to see the flag gone.

I know it pisses off my conservative neighbors but that's the idea. My street leads out to a major road so we get quite a bit of through traffic. My office is in the front of the house and from my window i can see many cars & trucks slowing down to look at the signs. One fella pulled out his fone & took a picture. I don't know if their Repugs or Dems but it's all good. No signs stolen & vandalism yet.

My area in Montgomery County PA isn’t exactly super blue, but not a lot of RW extremism around. Most people wear masks here.

and beside roads. This time around, I see very few and could likely even count them if I drove by each one.

That doesn’t say the same people won’t vote for Trump this time around, but it does look like they are ashamed to admit it. What I hope is that some Trump voters from 2016 sit out the election and Dems that didn’t vote realize what a dumb decision they made.
