Oliver Stone, Bill Maher tangle on reliability of US intelligence on Russia: 'You think they're lyin

Oliver Stone tangled with HBO's Bill Maher on Friday night over the reliability of U.S. intelligence as it pertains to Russian meddling in American presidential elections, with the "JFK" director arguing "we have to question everything that comes out of our intelligence agencies."

Stone interviewed Russian President Vladimir Putin for the Showtime series "The Putin Interviews," with Stone having repeatedly questioned intelligence agencies' conclusions around Kremlin-led interference in the 2016 presidential election.

"You can't really think that a Russian president should be able to rat-f--- our elections like this, can you?" Maher asked Stone.

"Oh Bill, I've known you all too long and I think you're sophisticated enough to know, we have to question everything that comes out of our intelligence agencies," Stone replied. "If you haven't learned that by now, you've got a long way to go still."

"So they're lying?" Maher asked.

"Intelligence agencies are not reliable. They've been screwing with America going back to the Vietnam War, going back to the Iraq Wars, the Afghanistani wars," Stone retorted "It's very hard to find out the truth from them. Everything they publish, the rumors, the anonymous sources, the think tanks, the anti-Russia...it all adds up into this ball of wax that becomes enormous. And then they have people like you, who are skeptical generally, believing it. I would really triple-check everything, every one of those sources.

Anyone watch this segment? I turned the show off when Thomas Frank (I think it was) dismissed the Democrats as more beholden to Whole Foods/Tech worker types.

Believing what 17 agencies, the mueller investigation, house and senate investigations, numerous journalists and media outlets, and others have all agreed on.

Never mind the Russians in the Oval Office, manafort's conviction, Flynn's conviction, the secret meetings and calls with Putin, etc.

Ffs.

that would do Q-Anon proud.

It glorifies homophobe Jim Garrison and turns Clay Shaw, whose only "crime" was to be a closeted gay man, into some kind of arch villain. It gets so many documented details wrong--from the bogus speech Garrison delivers at the end of the film, a speech entirely made up, to one of the characters toasting the end of "Camelot" immediately after the assassination, when the play wasn't connected with the Kennedy era until Jacqueline made her observation in an interview weeks later--that it would take pages to entirely refute its thicket of lies and nonsense. Characters are invented, words put into the mouths of real people, scam artists are celebrated and a homicidal wife-beating thug like Oswald is turned into some kind of innocent victim. It's "fake history" pure and simple.

It's too bad so many Americans get their "history" from such drivel, and part of the reason why we've been cursed with this current atrocity of an administration.

And while there are multiple examples to support his thesis, the Trump situation has to be viewed through a different lense. Trump owes something to Putin.
