Rescue crews recover body of off-duty firefighter who went missing in the Detroit River

Johnson went missing Friday after attempting to rescue swimmers in distress, Deputy Fire Commissioner Dave Fornell tells CNN.

The world lost a courageous hero. I'm not a religious person, but I recognize there is wisdom in holy books.

2. 30-some years ago I went swimming in a river in Belize.

The water's surface looked deceptively calm and slow moving, and I wanted a refreshing swim. I entered the water from the bank and did the universal shallow dive to go all in the cool water. I was no more than five or six feet from the bank but once in the deeper water the current snatched me quick. When I surfaced I was further out than I wanted to be and the river bank was rushing by faster than I could run. It was all I could do to swim cross current. When I finally reached the bank again I was way down stream, and scared half to death. I have a lot more respect for flowing water now.

I'm sorry to hear this man didn't make it back.
