..."those were Jackie Kennedy's crab apple trees"

Americans recoiled in horror after First Lady Melania Trump took to Twitter on Saturday to unveil the newly renovated Rose Garden Saturday ahead of her speech there Tuesday for the Republican National Convention.

Twitter users blasted the first lady for removing about a dozen crabapple trees from the Rose Garden planted by Jackie Kennedy in 1961.

I watched the process of some 150 year old (Huge) live oak trees being moved where I used to work. It is an expensive process, but there are people who specialize in it, and it is generally, although not always, successful. Crab Apples aren't that big, it shouldn't be a problem.

The key is to cut the roots in perimeter around the tree then let the tree sit and recover for a few days before the actual move. Then once moved keeping the soil moist until the tree is able to grow enough new roots to survive.

Still its horrific what Melania did. Its like gutting the China room in the White House and putting in a rec room.

This just seems to be pointlessly petty and messed up to me for some reason. Everybody left those trees alone for almost 60 years. Now, with 2 months left before trump is tossed out she goes and uproots the these trees ("which will be planted elsewhere" yea right).

Granted, I didn't know about the trees before this, but mostly nobody did and didn't have to. The inhabitants of the White House knew better than to be quite horrible enough to pull them up. A good number of them were/are plenty horrible on their own merits.

Why do they need to destroy all that came before them? They've moved classic portraits and relegated them to back rooms, eliminated Michelle O's wonderful vegetable garden, and now this.

How very sad to reverse contributions by former First Ladies that should stand with history.

but this WaPo story discussing the history of the Rose Garden and some of the rationale behind the redo sheds some light.

The piece is is too generous to the current wife of the wannabe dictator, but about the removal of the crab apples, it contains two sentences, which I've bolded, that speak to the unnecessary loss:

It is evident that once the Rose Garden is renovated, it will have a different feel to it, with some 200 rose bushes planted in pastel colors. The garden will feel more open and sunnier but perhaps less interesting. It will feel the loss of the crab apple trees, which are full of effervescent blossom in April, decorative fruit in September and a sculptural quality in the winter. They served as a reminder of Washington’s seasonality, and the preciousness of time.

But still they along with the yew bushes provided a neat part of a sun / shadow look along the colonnade.

As near as I can tell they planted crap.

They also removed some nice roses too.

BTW. Jackie Kennedy had some really good people who helped in the design and installation of "her rose garden."

BTW I'm a professional @ this stuff and this stunt will loose even more votes for Trump.

Move them, give them away as gifts or sell them on eBay for money?

This was a horrible insult to past presidents and the American people, IMO.

.... some old standards might still be going but I doubt it. As per the roses that were in the
garden when Melania "renewed it" in August I doubt any of them could be saved.

The new garden is an abortion and looks like it was done by Joe's Lawn and Landscaping
Service. The secret of a good landscape is you should always have something of interest
year round and from what I could tell this work doesn't pass that test.

Everyone seems to be upset about the lack of color in the new setup... but since we're past Spring and Summer flowers, i do wonder what it will look like in Spring. Did they remove all of the tulips? Honestly that and the apple trees seem to be what most people are upset about. I'm more pissed off about the concrete path...

She's totally hollow - you can see right through her.
She's bent and gnarled but still gifts us with fragrant blossoms and some fruit.
She's the Queen of our garden and I love her dearly!

most people would have removed her years ago. I had an arborist assess the trees on my property and he suggested that we just tend to her as a beloved pet rather than cut her down. That's what we've done. My kids ate peanut butter and crab apple jelly sandwiches.

Perhaps it's different with blossoming crab apple trees. Ours bears fruit - not so much any more though.

My wife and I are going to start a grove of oaks in my step-daughter's and her husband's property (they have 20 acres and the room for it). The acorns are from an old oak on our property and we'll plant one tree for each of the grandchildren. We have two started already this year and we should have 6 more started next year. I'll probably plant a few extra in case of losses.

I may be the one lone voice, but those trees were old (nearing end of lifespan and maybe losing some attractiveness), and they were obscuring another beautiful feature - that gorgeous collonade, of equal historic significance! Everything was rather overgrown and suffocating and now looks fresher, but the low-growing beautiful flowers should have remained.

Flowering crabapple trees often (but not always, depending on variety) produce messy small fruit, which are of limited use due to their bitter and tart flavor.

I would like to know if the trees were moved, and who did the work.
